Publisher's Summary

Meg Tallmadge is a veterinarian at a clinic in Laramie, Wyoming. She’s got a great job, great friends, deep ties to the family ranch, and big plans for her vet future. Sure, there are bumps in the road, like her mom’s continued denial about who Meg is and her painful and infuriating attempts to make Meg a “proper” woman. Then there’s Meg’s recent breakup with a girlfriend, which has her wondering why she can’t seem to open up to relationships. But Meg knows that life is messy, and sometimes all you can do is get through and shake it off. What she can’t seem to shake off, however, is her past.

It’s been almost 10 years to the day since she met the love of her life, and about eight since she let her go. Meg has a hard time admitting that maybe she didn’t really let go, and that maybe some things you never really get over, no matter how hard you try. But her past is half a world away, caught up in her own life, relationship, and journalism career, and Meg isn’t one to chase the ghosts of past relationships. Even if they send you a birthday card and nudge what you thought were the closed-off parts of your heart. After all, second chances are the stuff of fantasies and movies where the good guy always gets a happy ending. You can’t count on something like that.

Or can you?

Terrible

Abby Craden’s narrative is brilliant. Other than that, this book is simply terrible. I listened to it as much as I could and then just put it down again, forever

Very wordy

I was willing to give this book a try, even with the 16+ hour timeframe. But, I had to stop after a few chapters because the detail is OVERBOARD! Like detailing how the napkin was taken on and off the cornbread to keep it warm.

I like the description of the book but I just can’t devote that much time to a book that makes me want to pull my hair out.

Loved it

Saw this recommended by Gaby Mourinho on LezReview Books. Have gotten some great recommendations off there, so decided to try it. What a pleasant surprise. Part 1 was a really sweet romance set on a Wyoming ranch. Meg is a real cowgirl type, studying to be a vet, and working part time in the family business. A reporter comes to write a story about them, with unexpected consequences. Thoroughly enjoyed this part.
Enjoyed Part 2, From the hat down, even more. It follows the same characters about 10 years down the line, when things have turned out rather differently to what we expected.
I loved the 2 main characters and the various family members and friends surrounding them, were interesting and added much colour to the story. Meg's life as a vet treating mostly large animals, was fascinating. In fact, there was just so much to this story that made it a joy to listen to. It's sad in places, makes you think, makes you laugh, is pretty hot a couple of times, and overall is super entertaining.
Narration of part 1 is good and part 2 is great. Part 2 gets 5 stars, part 1 gets 4 and a bit. I would happily have paid full price if this wasn't on Audible Escape.

I like it..

I like it kinda more than like it but too long really for what it is. Not enough on the relationship between Meg and Gena before the break up. Or letting us experience the break up from both point of views. Centralized too much on Meg's career and her being lost. Need more sex, passion and more Meg and Gena. Than at the end its rushed to marriage. Also, too descriptive of everything. Some descriptions are great but when every moment, person or action has a long description its a bit boring. Love to read more books by Andi though.

Well it was good and not so good

The first part was perfect length as far as writing. Wasn’t over detailed the “love” time takes place in a week that’s the only down part I have for the boots up. From the hat down my gosh the details and the unnecessary details. A side story was also in this and wasn’t even properly completed. I feel like the author had to meet a number of words or pages and stretched this one way more then needed. It is cute though when you ignore all the filler the relationship between the main characters is more realistic I felt then the first wasn’t over a week. I listen to the 2nd book while doing other things was on more for background. Glad I got to hear it with escapes to bad it’s ending. I liked that subscription.

Moonshine, Booger’s & Bugger Off

How do I start this? I was so busy listening to these book a lot of house work didn’t get done today. These books were just entertaining and emotional, I laughing, I cried & let this adventure put me to sleep. The last chapter I heard, I go back 2, to get up to speed. I cried in the last chapter, Awesome Sauce! Off to my next adventure. Thanks.

So....

I did not enjoy Paige McKinney’s strange lilting narration. Luckily, her part was the shorter of the two. It was so distracting I can’t even comment about the writing, except to say I’m glad I stuck with it to get the first part of the story.

Abby Craden was fantastic! I know she has a big fan base among audible listeners. A lot of people seem to believe anything she voices will be gold. I am not one of those. She’s good. Don’t get me wrong. But not every performance is a winner. This one, however, is one of the best I’ve heard. Her tone and inflection capture the feel of the story. Every character has a unique and distinct voice, which she maintains across hours of reading. A good character actor disappears. Instead of seeing the actor you see the characters they create. She has done that in this performance. I didn’t hear Abby Craden doing voices. I heard each of the very different people in this story speaking. Seriously, I don’t have enough good things to say about her performance of this title.

How do I give a star rating to two performances of such disparate quality?! From the Boots Up was about 4 hours. From the Hat Down was the balance of time. So I have given more weight to Abby Craden’s performance.

This is two books, but one story. It is long. A whole world, a full community of people, is introduced. Most of them have enough depth to make them feel real. There is plenty of room for more stories, a series. Secondary characters could be explored. I haven’t looked to see if there are more books available in print. Andi Marquette has offered some fine writing, and once I got to the Abby Craden narrated portion, I wasn’t clock-watching. I enjoyed where the tale took me, all the way to the end.

enjoyable and charming with a slower pace

I think this book is much better than some of the reviews would lead you to believe. It has excellent narration, with Abby Craden doing the last ten hours. There was more detail in the writing which leads to the slower pace and caused me to see foreshadowing where there really wasn't any. Steamy scenes and realistic characters.

Great story

I loved the characters and it was refreshing to read a nice story about nice people and no bad guys screwing things up

Suffer the Boots, be soothed by the Hat!

Ok, I don't normally write reviews, but I had to mention something here..
This is actually a bundle of 2 books, the first (From the Boots Up) being about 4 hours long, and the second (From the Hat Down) around 12 hours...
Thankfully I had paid attention to the fact that Abby Craden is one of the narrators, she performs the second story.
Had it not been for that fact, I would have given up on the whole thing very quickly!
The reason?... Paige McKinney, who narrates the first story, has one of the most annoying performance styles I've come across.
Her voice is all singsongy and lilts up and down and is far too chirpy for the text she is reading a lot of the time. It's a voice suited to reading to a group of kids, not the voice I want to hear performing a adult lesbian romance novel!
To my annoyance I see Paige McKinney has narrated quite a few lesfic novels (really???... I mean... REALLY???!!!)
I will now actively avoid these!

Abby Craden on the other hand is a master of her craft. She could read the IKEA catalogue and still do all the voices and make it sound sexy!

So please, I urge you, grit your teeth and put up with the performance of the first (thankfully shorter) story, and be utterly soothed by the luscious second.
It's a lovely tale of two young women falling in love in Book One.. and how circumstances alter as time goes on and we revisit where they're at a decade later in Book Two and find that life has thrown them a few stumbling blocks.
Enjoy... I did!
And I will definitely seek out more work by the author, Andi Marquette.

Loved it

I loved these 2 books. I thought it would annoy me having 2 different narrators but it really didn’t. They’re set 10 yrs apart so it kinda didn’t bother me like I thought it was. Great story line great love story. Definitely worth a listen

50/50

I liked this book, the characters and environment lead to a interesting listen. Although like some of the reviews mention, it is a little long winded. This book could of been shorted down by at least 8 chapters. But if like me and you're a Lesbian romantic/adventure book enthusiast then give it a go. 👯🏻‍♀️
