About this listen
Guitarist and singer Howard Fishman and writer Philip Simmons on this edition of Fresh Air. Fishman is of the Howard Fishman Quartet, a group resurrecting the jazz and swing music of the early 20th century, while their experimental and improvisational style sets them apart. Philip Simmons was diagnosed eight years ago, at the age of 35, with ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The disease is degenerative, with no cure. He's written a new collection of essays, Learning to Fall: The Blessings of an Imperfect Life. (Broadcast Date: July 26, 2001)
