Publisher's Summary

Professor Andre Aciman and comedian Margaret Cho on this edition of Fresh Air. Aciman's family was forced to leave Egypt when he was fourteen, during a long wave of anti-Semitism and Arab nationalism. Aciman's book Out of Egypt follows his close-knit, flamboyant Jewish family through 50 years of residence in Alexandria and explores the lives and relationships of his grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts, and finally his own emotions about leaving his idyllic childhood home. He is also the author of a book of essays called False Papers: Essays on Exile and Memory. This interview was originally broadcast February 13, 1995. Stand-up comic Margaret Cho's film version of her one-woman, stand up show, I'm the One That I Want, will be released. She talks about her foray into the TV sitcom world, when she was the first Asian-American to star in her own TV show. The series, All-American Girl was short lived, and a nightmare for Cho. The new film of her show won't be Cho's first time on the screen: she is the voice of the detective in Rugrats and she appeared in John Woo's Face/Off. (Broadcast Date: July 21, 2000)
