Franz Schubert haust zur Untermiete in einer schäbigen Kammer. Er komponiert wie ein Besessener, 7 Stunden jeden Tag: Lieder, Sinfonien, Messen, Klaviermusik, was ihm eben einfällt. Richtige Aufträge hat er allerdings so gut wie keine. Dass er so gar keine Anerkennung für seine Werke findet, dass ihn keiner lobt, das tut ihm schon weh. Nur Schuberts Freunde aus dem gemeinsamen Club, genannt "Die Unsinnsgesellschaft" mögen seine Musik, aber selbst die verstehen nicht, warum die Musik oft so bedrohlich und verzweifelt klingt, als hätte der Tod Schuberts Feder geführt. Eigentlich ist er ja ein lustiger Geselle, der Franz Schubert, zumindest manchmal! In solchen Momenten klingt seine Musik auch paradiesisch schön und heiter. Mehr Fröhliches und Schubert wäre ein berühmter Komponist, glauben Schuberts Freunde! Und im Geheimen hecken sie einen Plan aus, der ihrem Schubert endlich Ruhm und Ehre bringen soll.
