Søren Vase, der er født i begyndelsen af 1920’erne, voksede op i en fattig hedeegn ved Mariager Fjord under 1920’ernes og 1930’ernes verdensomspændende, økonomiske krise. I erindringsbogen "Fra lyngens land" fortæller han om en barn- og ungdom, hvor det tætte forhold til naturen allerede tidligt satte sit præg på ham og hans måde at omgås andre mennesker på. Søren Vase (1923-2008) var en dansk forfatter, skoleinspektør, jæger og fisker. Han levede sit liv i tæt kontakt med den jyske natur, og han har skrevet flere bøger om netop naturen og om de dyr, der lever i den danske natur.
