Story
A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Story
Dorothy Graham is dead, which is inconvenient, not least for her. Luckily, she has planned for this eventuality. Now, if any of the truly dreadful people she is related to want to get their hands on her money, they’re going to have to do so via a fiendish difficult and frankly bizarre competition of Dorothy’s devising. After all, just because you’re dead, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a last laugh at the expense of people who made your life miserable.

Story
Rotherweird is a twisted, arcane murder-mystery with shades of Deborah Harkness, Hope Mirrlees and Ben Aaronovitch, Mervyn Peake and Edward Gorey at their disturbing best. The town of Rotherweird stands alone - there are no guidebooks, despite the fascinating and diverse architectural styles cramming the narrow streets, the avant-garde science and offbeat customs. Cast adrift from the rest of England by Elizabeth I, Rotherweird's independence is subject to one disturbing condition: nobody, but nobody, studies the town or its history.

Publisher's Summary
In the fifth of his best-selling series Ben Aaronovitch takes Peter Grant out of whatever comfort zone he might have found and takes him out of London - to a small village in Herefordshire where the local police are reluctant to admit that there might be a supernatural element to the disappearance of some local children. But while you can take the London copper out of London you can't take the London out of the copper.
Travelling west with Beverley Brook, Peter soon finds himself caught up in a deep mystery and having to tackle local cops and local gods. And what's more all the shops are closed by 4pm....

Fabulous narration brings the book to life
After listening to Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's fabulous narration on this book, I somehow was compelled to buy the first four audiobooks in the series and listen to them, even though I had bought, read and really enjoyed them in paperback. The audiobook versions are just so much better. I listened to Foxglove Summer twice. Highly recommended. Holdbrook-Smith is one of the best narrators I have come across.

Can Kobna Holdbrook-Smith please read all the books?
I love this series, and have read them
as soon as they've been released. Generally I prefer reading over audiobooks because I like hearing the characters voices in my head the way I imagine them, if that makes sense. But not with Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Not only is his range incredible, his female characters are as compelling as his male ones, and his various accents are completely convincing - but the really wonderful thing is that he brings the characters to life better than my imagination does. I felt like I properly got to know some of the characters for the first time after listening to this recording. The Ben & Kobna combo, doesn't get better than that.

A narrator with talent
I must rank as the least likely happy reviewer. Give me an early Gerald Seymour, a Nelson de Mille, or Barry Eisler and I'll be happy. And here I am on my 6th Rivers book in a row and loving my otherwise awful commute! Fantasy stories, no less! I have my faves, but each takes us down a different path, each has enough to feel familiar, but without feeling formulaic yet. But for me the narration is what tips the balance. PC Grant has become a character with life, and the narrator's talent is a big chunk of why I'm enjoying these so much. It's not just an authentic voice, as much as it feels to me that he really has his head around the author's intent, and then breathes on it and it goes from 2D to 3D in an instant. My only caution is to recommend listening in order. I think important to the whole series is Grant's evolution. Do it, give Rivers a go! I sincerely believe that you won't be disappointed. This, by the way, is the only review I've bothered to write atcany length

The music is too annoying
This is an otherwise awwsom series that is ruined by the inspid jazz music that plays at the beginning of each chapter. It wastes so much time when they could just be getting on with reading.
