I’d never read a Wyndham that wasn’t sci/fi, and was glad to hear this - well narrated by Zoe Telford-. Good feisty female protagonist , though she does rather drop from the story - and a great insight into fears leading up to WW2 , an echo of our time.

Fascinating glimpse into interwar anxiety

narrator was too softly spoken and then there was a character who was sometimes Derek and other times Eric... very confusing. story was ok. not a very good ending.

Derek or Eric?

Never having heard of John Wyndham, I supposed this to be a variation of an Agatha Christie story. I loved the performance and was delighted by the dialogue.
As the situation became progressively more serious, I couldn't wait for the next chapter....
Eventually I was shocked by the turn of events. I'll most definitely be looking for more of John Wyndham's work

A Delightful Surprise

Whilst I enjoyed the book and the mystery, unfortunately the narrator's delivery was distracting. The characters were narrated in an odd breathy manner that totally distracted from the story. Luckily at the point the inspector was introduced the breathlessness lessened which is the only reason I was able to finish. The story, itself, was good.

Narrator had odd delivery

Written in 1935 and words and wisdom are still valid today. Replace chemical warfare with biological warfare and the story is just as relevant for modern times.

One of his best!

I did not finish this book - lasted about two and a half hours before chucking it in. I could not get past the way it was read by Zoe Thorn who whispered the text for no apparent reason. It was very distracting and unnecessary for the story. Perhaps she was trying to convey suspense but to my mind it was just weird.

Strange performance distracted from the story

The story sounds very interesting and I might still check it out later, but this narration was not for me. Apart from characters, she was very softly spoken, barely above a whisper, and like she was letting us in on some fun secret. Suitable for a children's story maybe but for this it was distracting and made me feel uncomfortable. I had to stop after half an hour. Still giving 2 stars cos I'm sure others will be fine with it, just not my preference.

Narrator wasn't my preference
