Publisher's Summary

Fortune has a secret.

Humanity, in its struggle to escape its own planet's demise, began sending colony ships from Earth almost 700 years ago in the desperate hope a handful would find someplace habitable for human life and be able to continue our species. Only one ship survived.

It survived only because it found a vast swath of alien planets, all terraformed, all utterly abandoned. Alien megastructures cold and lifeless. Alien vehicles left in panicked lines, sealed from the inside, no corpses within. Empty space stations, with no one to run them but the dust. Resources everywhere, ripe for the taking.

But Fortune is different. Of all the planets colonized by humans after the chaos of Migration, this single jungle-infested colony on the very edge of the known universe holds the key to the alien collapse...and to humanity's survival. Everywhere else advanced alien ruins mar every surface, every planetoid, every debris ring and asteroid, but of the creatures that made them there is no sign. On Fortune something survives....

Unfortunately for humanity, while time is running out, a rebellion is brewing, one that could save our species - or consign it to dust like the aliens that came before us. Now, 700 years after our first brush with extinction, the fate of the human race once again rests on the shoulders of a few: a seven-year-old sociopath and her combat-gifted big sister, a man who's dreamed of the future, an infamous smuggler, and a Coalition pilot sworn to destroy the rebel cause.

This time, however, the stakes are higher. For lurking on Fortune is a secret.

An epic postapocalyptic science fiction adventure that will make you hold your breath, cry, curse the powers that be, and in the end question what exactly it means to be human.

Solid second novel

A solid second novel that does a great job of deepening the intrigue and politics of the first one. I loved the worldbuilding and complicated politics and the often difficult character development.

There were some points where there obnoxiousness of a character was almost frustrating enough to put the book down for good, but I'm glad I persevered.

An amazing story and an amazing performance!

Sara King's masterful construction of this modern space opera is both deeply personal and vastly expansive. My only criticism is why can't there be more to this story RIGHT NOW?!?! I suppose I'll have to make due with all her other stories :)

Allyson Johnson is a tour de force. I completely forget that it's one person telling me the story. She's fantastic at everything that I have heard, but these last two stories by Sara King have really allowed her to shine.

A great adventure with too-smart kids

I loved everything about this and can't wait for book 3! the characters are an interesting mix of interesting, relatable, and so unrelatable that they're fascinating. the adventure continues in full swing and is most certainly not over. the narrator is possibly my favorite that I've heard yet!

Terribly disjointed<br />

The first book was decent. This one was just a bunch of repetition of character tropes and very poor transitions or integration. Hard to track. Very disappointing. Love the narrator.

Have you listened to any of Allyson Johnson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Shes the best reader Ive heard. Her voices for each character is amazing.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Any additional comments?

If you try this writer, shes like no one else.

Excellent Excellent

This book and series are easy to read and give a piece of escapist fantasy that is like an episode "Raiders of the Lost Ark" engaging and entertaining without being presumptuous or overly preachy. Once you start to read its hard to put it down. Be prepared to spend sometime when you pick this book up, it's an experience best taken a couple hours at a time. I truly hope the author continues with this series, there is a good cast of characters that are ever developing, plot mysteries that the reader can't wait to see where the author takes them, this is a series with a lot of potential. It's a great value and exceptionally entertaining. Just check the desire for fundamental truths or techno babble at the cover, and sit back for an entertaining fantasy read.
I would summerize the two stories in the series as "Star Wars" meets the "Simpsons" just a good read.
Definitely read volume 1 "Fortune's Rising" before this one.

Kept me on the edge of my seat!

Get character development. I just love science fiction. The story line is gripping. I can't wait for the third installment of this series.

comes to a sudden end mid story!

Not as good as the first one, the character Natalie is so unbelievable as an ex solder, she is a very annoying girly brat that never stops whining! The character Anna is so very vile that it is hard to believe that she would seriosly get away with her stunts for so long, I think someone would have just 'topped' her. The middle gets very muddled with too much going on to follow properly. You just think it is going to round up to some conclusion but it doesn't........it just ends. Obviously it is going to conclude in a further book but even so, it is a bit abrupt. The premise is good and would make a very good Netflix series if you cleaned up the story line and rounded out the characters a bit but I don't think I will be bothered to get the next book if it comes to audible.
