About this listen
It’s no secret that I’ve been in love with Jax Cartwright for half my life. A terrible decision, really, and not just because he’s my brother’s best friend or he’s ten years older than me. Thanks to an overprotective family, he’s ignored me for years, but still, I can’t get his grumpy a** out of my head. And in a wine-fueled, post-bad date funk, I make another terrible decision: show up at his cabin to ask why he’s never given me a chance. The storm that got me stuck there overnight was a total fluke, but I’m no fool. While Jax is perfectly clear about not wanting a family or love or any of the happily-ever-afters I’ve dreamed of, what’s the harm in asking for just one night? The worst thing he can say is no.
He doesn’t though, and I was saying yes, yes, yes a whole lot after that.
Best. Decision. Ever.
One night is enough to feel like I can move on, and we agree to let it be a secret kept safe between us.
But you know what makes it hard to keep a one-night secret about my not-so-secret crush?
A positive pregnancy test. Oh baby, things are about to get interesting.
©2024 Karla Sorensen (P)2024 Karla SorensenThe story begins with her resolutely refusing to accept a No from the hero and climbs into bed with him when drunk. If the genders had been reversed this wouldn't have been acceptable .. so why can't males say no too??
I don't relate to the trope of protective siblings who can't accept their females are adults and can make their own decisions. This family have often been irritating though in their boundary problems so that isn't surprising.
While the story was otherwise generally Ok I got whiplash by the sudden change in personality in the hero who can't put two words together at the beginning or in other books then ends up eloquently sharing his feelings at length and waxing poetic.
There was a sex scene near the end that went on a bit long and had be dozing off a bit .. though it was narrated very slowly too so that may have contributed to that effect.
NARRATORS.: Connor Crais is one of my favorite narrators. However, he did have me dozing a bit at times. Sometimes when he reads descriptive passages ( or that long sex scene), his voice can move to monotone which can make me dozzy. He'd have an excellent meditation and hypnosis voice.
Samantha Brentmoor is a narrator I can struggle with. She narrates very well until she does a hero's voice. Unfortunately, when she drops her tone to create a male voice, she tends to go quiet and even muffled. I can often not catch what she says and have to continually turn the volume up. She is usually good otherwise.
These negatives may be quibbles though. Sorensen is a good writer and this concludes a good series.
Mostly a good listen. Both narrators solid but could do with a little tweaking.
