About this listen

The new novel from best-selling author Graham Norton

In his tense and darkly comic new novel, Norton casts a light on the relationship between mothers and daughters, and truth and self-preservation with unnerving effect.

Carol is a divorced teacher living in a small town in Ireland, her only son now grown. A second chance at love brings her unexpected connection and belonging. The new relationship sparks local speculation: what does a woman like her see in a man like that? What happened to his wife who abandoned them all those years ago? But the gossip only serves to bring the couple closer.

When Declan becomes ill, things start to fall apart. His children are untrusting and cruel, and Carol is forced to leave their beloved home with its worn oak floors and elegant features and move back in with her parents.

Carol's mother is determined to get to the bottom of things; she won't see her daughter suffer in this way. It seems there are secrets in Declan's past, strange rumours that were never confronted, and suddenly the house they shared takes on a more sinister significance.

I love the Irish sense of self deprivation and humour.
Love the Irishness in this and all of Graham books. As an Australian / Irish women
it's very familiar to me.

I’ve just listened to this book for a second time and really enjoyed it. Graham is such a good storyteller. I don’t quite know how to express it - his stories are based on relatively every day domestic relationships and situations and he describes his character’s thoughts, interactions, motivations and actions in such an insightful, familiar and humorous way. His narration is excellent and distinguishes between the characters well. I’m looking forward to future releases as I’ve listened to all his books to date and he can’t release them fast enough for me 🙂.

A really enjoyable listen

Love the characters and the unfolding story in Graham’s books, and the added bonus of his narration, can make you feel like you grew up in small town Ireland, 5 thumbs up

This was my second Graham Norton book, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first one. I wasn’t expecting him to be the narrator, so that was an added bonus hearing his voice tell the story!

Beautifully unpredictable. Again, his characters are interesting, funny - without being overly clichéd, and with dimension. A strongly constructed start finishes with an ‘edge of your seat’ finish that is both unpredictable and satisfying.

Another brilliant book by Graham.
