Publisher's Summary

William Benson. Criminal barrister. Convicted murderer....

Convicted of murder 16 years ago, William Benson is ostracised by the establishment and his family. Supported by a close-knit group including solicitor Tess de Vere, he's defied them all and opened his own Chambers. Now he faces the case of his life - and the terminal illness of Helen Camberley, who helped him leave his prison life behind.

Jorge Menderez, a doctor from Spain, has been found dead in a deserted warehouse in East London. A troubled man, he'd turned to counsellor Karen Lynwood seeking help. Now Karen's husband, John, is accused of his murder. Who is Menderez, and why did he come to London?

Benson is defending the couple against seemingly impossible odds, while secrets from his own past threaten to overwhelm him....

Critic Reviews

"Assured storytelling and highly intriguing moral complexity. I tore through it." (Chris Brookmyre)

"Punchy dialogue and devious plotlines...compelling." (The Times

"The courtroom scenes are brilliant and Benson really comes alive under pressure. Stubborn, fitful and contradictory, he's a highly individualised creation." (Spectator

Absolutely captivating

I can’t stop listening. So much history, lies and intrigue from the past and the present. I love it.

Wow--series is really rockin now

This is a great series with Benson's own historical case playing out alongside his increasingly stellar legal career. Both are done well -- the complex psychology and trauma of the past integrating with well plotted courtroom scenes and investigations. A great group of characters with real depth. Pleased that Benson is better treated in this one. Definitely my favourite so far, but it's worth listening to all three in order.

Worthy courtroom drama

After tiring of the John Grisham novels, I tried John Fairfax series. Great story line but I think the backstory should have finished on this title, which is book three.
The standout feature of all three books so far, however, is the excellent and authentic courtroom interrogation.

Favourite narrator ever.

If Daniel narrated all the novels it would make me happy.
I haven’t finished this story. I fell asleep during a section and now don’t know what is going on. Will try to continue later. It’s a good yarn.

Outstanding

Captivating and enthralling from the start. A complex ride of revelations, rectifications, results and restitutions. Thoroughly engrossing.
