Nei primi anni della dittatura fascista a Fontamara, "un antico e oscuro luogo di contadini poveri nella Marsica", i "cafoni" subiscono soprusi e ingiustizie così antichi da sembrare naturali come la neve e il vento. Berardo Viola, che porta una scintilla di ribellione, subirà le torture della milizia fascista e sarà ucciso, ma assurgerà a emblema di un nuovo, seppure ancora impreciso e velleitario, livello di dignità.
Opera intessuta di una precisa verità storica, "Fontamara" fonde la ballata popolare, la parabola evangelica e la satira politica in una partitura corale che si fa violenta denuncia di ogni ingiustizia.
