»Søndagsbørn er der held ved,« sagde hans Bedstemor, og det lunede så rart. Dines Skafte Jespersen er optimist. Levende og humørfuldt skildrer han tilværelsen, som han oplevede den i begyndelsen af 1900-tallet. Først rigtig ude på landet midtvejs mellem Saksild og Rude, så nogle år i storbyen Odder, på landet igen en tid, så højskole og endelig tre år i den gamle marskby Tønder, der dengang netop igen var blevet dansk, men stadig havde tysk flertal.
Jespersen møder mange mærkelige, festlige og rigtige mennesker på sin vej og lærer noget af dem alle, indtil han i 1926 står med sit eksamensbevis fra seminariet i Tønder i hånden og selv skal til at lære fra sig.
