About this listen

Arthur Stannard was just 17 years old when he was transported more than 11,000 miles from his home in rural England to the rugged open landscapes of North Island, New Zealand.

The son of a naval officer, Arthur was one of hundreds of boys and girls who were taken from their families and shipped to locations around the Dominions.

Arthur’s destination was Flock House, a residential home and farm training school, set up and run by New Zealand farmers as a debt of gratitude to The Royal Navy for protecting their merchant ships during the First World War.

Missing home and loved ones, Arthur and his new brothers first had to survive, make new bonds, and begin new lives in a land, climate and culture foreign to them.

For some it was a challenge too far. For Arthur it was his making.
