Publisher's Summary

He's trapped in a ruined starship full of monsters. But every section he fixes will help him turn the tide.

Jasper Cloud has been torn from a dystopian Earth and thrust into a mighty but ruined alien starship, where deranged and mutated creatures haunt the darkened corridors. They’ve consumed all but one crewmember: the being serving as the ship’s core, a young woman as badly damaged as the starship itself.

They both should be as doomed as Jasper was back on Earth, but for one surprise: Jasper has the power to help repair the damaged sections of the mighty vessel.

And every section he repairs also augments his own body.

If he is quiet and careful, he can turn himself into a weapon capable of defeating the hungry horrors still prowling the ship’s halls, and reactivate the most powerful spacecraft left in the universe.

But if he fails, then the creatures will have a vessel of their own to visit and devour every populated planet left - Earth included.

Cradle meets Dead Space.

Brought to Life

A fantastic dual narration really brings this first arc of the story to life as we join an out of luck orphan with a heavy destiny - loved it.

Very nice

This book keeps you on the edge of your seat at some points and relaxed in some but it will keep you in its grip.
The narration was good and kept me gripped.
I can’t wait for the next book to be released.

Love the world that is being created!

Soo just finished Soulship book 1 first orbit on Audible, I read the whole series a few months go. And it was nice to go back and listen to book 1 plus I could tell the narrators truly took care to bring the characters to life...and the creatures/ monsters. Plus I think I picked up a few hints this time that I missed last time which is always fun!!!

Couldn't even finish the first chapter

The narrator spent too much time trying to mimic the sounds and snorting. Maybe once or twice, but it was grating and couldn't take it.

Great start

The MC is good hearted but strong, the world building is very intriguing, and the narration is incredible as both have so much emotion when called for.

Can’t wait for the rest of the books to be on Audible.

Someone needs to give Daniel Wisniewski a slap.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a good way to accurately rate the quality of the writing in this book. There are certainly flaws... The dialogue for instance wavers back and forth between being just ok to the worst kind of YA, eye-roll inducing, melodrama. Also, some of the world building and magic system explanations happen in one-sided, info-dump “conversations” that are clunky as hell. Also, there’s a feeling of disjointedness in the pacing and plot progression.

I’ve previously listened to Thompson’s other audiobook and found it to suffer from some of the same issues, but it was considerably more listenable. However, had I realized that this book was written by the same author as was Downfall and Rise, I might have reconsidered spending the credit.

All that said, I believe that I would have been able to make it all the way through First Orbit were it not for Daniel Wisniewski... A 15-year-old theater/drama club nerd would have found his performance to be offensively over-dramatic.

Wisniewski’s breathless delivery and portentous overtones are applied with equal ham-handedness regardless of wether he is describing garbage in an alley or delivering the monologue of an evil, ancient dragon. Throughout every one of his narrations I felt like I was sitting in a circle of 3-year-olds at a public library while an over enthusiastic librarian’s assistant acted out the story of the Three Little Pigs.

By an hour in I was worried that my eyeballs were going to get stuck in the upper right corner of my sockets because of the compulsive eye-rolling... I really shouldn’t be all that surprised. I’ve had to return other books narrated by Daniel Wisniewski in the past. The annoying thing is that occasionally I have listened to audiobooks where he was able to restrain himself and deliver his lines in such a way that they did not completely ruin the experience. It’s for this reason that I even considered purchasing this title in the first place.

Jessica Threet is the only reason I gave the narration 2 stars. She has some of the same tendencies as Wisniewski, but compared to his performance her delivery was a breath of fresh air. So please, if you know Daniel Wisniewski personally, do us all a favor and give him a good slap. Then tell him that he’s not reading 16 page children’s books to toddlers and moreover to just simmer down.

I ended up giving this book 3 stars overall because there was no way to accurately gauge the quality of the writing with the delivery hosing every word down with a pneumatic-powered cheese-sauce explosion.

If you want to check this book out, I highly recommend going with the text version... the story is at least somewhat interesting and engaging.

In summation, anyone who rated the narration in this audiobook anything over 2 stars is very likely a be-diapered, nipple-biter who is endlessly fascinated by the dietary habits of very hungry caterpillars, and these reviewers’ opinions should be treated with suspicion.

Good book

This was a pretty good book and I really enjoyed the story. I think there were some pacing issues and it was a bit overdramatic in places, bit overall good. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Has promise

I enjoyed where the story was starting to head, but I wasn't so keen on the narrator's overly dramatic monster voices.

Fantastic new series!

This is a fantastic new series, the narrators are brilliant and the story...it’s a combination of ship exploration and cultivation, Nathan’s one of my favourite authors, and I’m soooo pleased to see this on audible!
