Nigel Hopkins finds himself in the trenches of World War I under the command of teenage atheist, Second Lieutenant C.S Lewis. Nigel and his war dog must learn the source of true courage while facing a desperate enemy in No Man's Land in the final offensive of the war. Meanwhile, underage WAAC Elsie Fleming, working at the field hospital in Etaples, will have her idealism about war challenged by brutal realities she sees in the broken men who return from the front and the many who never return.
This is a great story that is told with vividness and care. As both a Christian and a war that are in I was immersed in a sensory experience through story that was quite satisfying and emotionally painful at the same time. The cleverness with which the author includes some of C.S. Lewis’s most famous quotes is commendable. Given that the author was the narrator for this audiobook, I felt very confident that the story was being told with great accuracy and intent.
Bond takes us on a gripping journey! A true page turning historical adventure through the eyes of a ground pounder. This is a terrific and twisting glimpse into the horrors of war while honoring the soldiers.
