Publisher's Summary

A young woman is in love with a successful surgeon, a man torn between his love for her and his incorrigible womanizing. His mistress, a free-spirited artist, lives her life as a series of betrayals - while her other lover, earnest, faithful, and good, stands to lose everything because of his noble qualities.

In a world where lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and fortuitous events, and everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. Hence we feel 'the unbearable lightness of being'.

A major achievement from one of the world's truly great writers, Milan Kundera's magnificent novel of passion and politics, infidelity and ideas, encompasses the extremes of comedy and tragedy, illuminating all aspects of human existence.

Terrible

Truly atrocious misogynist crap - annoying narrator as well. I barely finished it - waste of time and money.

Politically insightful yet confusing

The first half of this story was great, interesting and provoking in a fun manor.
The second half was confusing as the story seemed to go back and forth in time line without suggesting it had which made it hard to keep track of, and the provocative nature got more and more bizarre which is fine for some.
I don’t understand why some scenes were in this book…
However there were many quote-able lines, deep provoking thoughts and poetically sound ideas that made it very worth while.

Great narrator

Amazing story. Great performance by Richmond Hoxie. Second time reading it and love it as much as the first time.
