When Queenie Hennessy discovers that Harold Fry is walking the length of England to save her, and all she has to do is wait, she is shocked. Her note had explained she was dying. How can she wait? A new volunteer at the hospice suggests that Queenie should write again; only this time she must tell Harold everything. In confessing to secrets she has hidden for 20 years, she will find atonement for the past. As the volunteer points out, ‘Even though you’ve done your travelling, you’re starting a new journey, too.’
Queenie thought her first letter would be the end of the story. She was wrong. It was the beginning.Told in simple, emotionally-honest prose, with a mischievous bite, this is a novel about the journey we all must take to learn who we are; it is about loving and letting go. And most of all it is about finding joy in unexpected places and at times we least expect.

A Bit Disappointed
I was soo looking forward to this but I found it sadly disappointing. As much as I loved the quirky and droll Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry , I found this to be quite miserable and a bit depressing. I wish I'd never read it.

Hopelessly romantic
I loved the pilgrimage of Harold Fry as a story of friendship that had endured time and tragedy. I was disappointed to find out that Queenie had been in love with Harold the whole time, and as a result this story had an air of desperation that detracted from the characterisation of Queenie. I did however love the interactions between the folk at the hospice, it had a T. S Eliot/Prufrock feel to it, and the characters were hilariously real and entertaining.

Another beauty!
Rachel Joyce writes so well again. I was a bit daunted by the subject matter of this book, having faced some of it personally. I bet many of us have. I think there should be more books dealing with these places and topics. It is beautifully written, keeps you intrigued the whole way and yes, it’s a book about the whole of life, with plenty of laughter and joy. Highly recommend.

A truely excellent companion
A very enjoyable addition and completion to the story of Harold Fry. Queenie’s story was all the more enjoyable for the perspective it gave to the story of David, Harold’s son. Loved the final chapter for what it added.

I wish I could give it more stars.
Five stars aren't enough. The writing is inspired and inspiring. The narration is superb. I know I would recognise Queenie wherever we met. If you know Harold, you must meet Queenie.
This is a work of art that I will never forget, for all the right reasons.

Sweet and sad; a fabulous read!
What a fantastic follow up to "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry". I loved this book as much as the first.
An honest adaptation of a love story I am sure many would have suffered over time. You can't help but adore all of the characters - and the narrator does a splendid job of giving each of them voice and personality.
I wonder if Rachel could bring any of the other hospice characters to life as she did Queenie? Truly talented.

Wonderful!
What a joy to read this book and the first one of Harold Fry's journey. l've travelled every minute of Queenie's journey with her and been enchanted. Celia Imrie's reading was delightful, so perfect l could see Queenie in the hospice so clearly, exactly the right person to do it. I was reminded often of my days in nursing and my care of the dying, such was the insightful writing of this lovely book. Thank you Rachel Joyce.
