Beckett: If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have. I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride. My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart.

Interesting story to pass the time

Publisher's Summary
The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss from the number one bestselling author of The Four Winds, The Nightingale and publishing February 2024, The Women.
‘A master storyteller’ - Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing
‘A rich, compelling novel of love, sacrifice and survival, as epic as the Alaskan landscape it so vividly describes’ - Kate Morton, author of Homecoming
‘A woman has to be tough as steel up here. You can’t count on anyone to save you and your children. You have to be willing to save yourselves’
Thirteen-year-old Leni is coming of age in a tumultuous time. Caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, she dares to hope that Alaska will lead to a better future for her family, and a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if it means following him into the unknown.
As Leni grows up in the shadow of her parents’ increasingly volatile marriage, she meets Matthew. And Matthew – thoughtful, kind, and brave – makes her believe in the possibility of a better life.
With her trademark combination of elegant prose and deeply drawn characters, Kristin Hannah celebrates the remarkable and enduring strength of women.
‘A masterclass’ - Karen Swan, author of The Stolen Hours

Maybe a movie to follow?
Absolutely loved every second of this. Will listen to it again in the future. A beautifully crafted tale full of emotion which reinforces the view that where there is risk, there is greater reward.

A beautiful story that brought me to tears.
I can not fault this book. Beautiful twists and turns that I didn’t expect. At points I was in tears, I’d become so involved in the story. Just fantastic.

Wow!
I fell in love with this book. One of the best I’ve listened to in a while. The story was rich in detail and pulled on my heart strings.
A beautiful and heartbreaking look at family dynamics in an Alaska bought to life with wonderful descriptions.

Huge recommendation!
I was recommended to read this book but beyond that push I had no idea what the book was about.
What a fabulous, surprising delightful book!
The story itself is wonderful, the characters clever and importantly real and flawed and believable. It is very clear that the author knows Alaska and brings the area to life as a pivotal character in the book.
Finally, the narration is masterful, damn Julia Whelan does a good job here.
I suppose this would count as a YA book due to the age of Lennie at the beginning but (as an adult) I enjoyed it immensely.

Strong women and clever narrative
Loved the way the author brought the environment and layers of human relationships through the metaphors of seasons. Rich descriptive context and it was easy to feel like I was part of the story. A great read that I could not stop.
