Editorial reviews

This historical romance from Jane Feather opens on a 17th-century battlefield where Sir Daniel Drummond discovers an injured young woman, dressed in a male soldier's clothes, among the bodies of the dead and dying. At risk of peril he decides to take her with him. This sets the stage for the tumultuous relationship to come. Daniel marries the young maiden and their ups and downs mirror the turbulent times of England at civil war.

Fleet Cooper gives a dramatic reading of this adventurous and passionate tale, clearly having fun with the regional dialects and accents. The romance of Reckless Angel will endear you to its hero and heroine, and the intrigue that they are wrapped up in will keep you wanting more.

Publisher's Summary

She turned his life into chaos even as she melted his heart.... The injured "boy" Sir Daniel Drummond rescues from a British battlefield is no boy at all, but a vivacious young enchantress fleeing her tyrannical father. Moved by her plight, herspirit, and her mesmerizing beauty - and his own young daughters' need for a mother - the dashing nobleman impulsively offers towed Henrietta "Harry" Ashby, who promptly throws his life and household into disarray.

Headstrong, impetuous, wildly unconventional, "Harry" knows precious little about wifely duties. But the irrepressible miss understands the importance of unwavering loyalty when danger threatens. And she knows daring ways to set a man's passions aflame - and the sensuous secret to transforming a marriage of convenience into a union of everlasting ecstasy and love.

Reckless Angel

Set at the end of the English Civil War, Sir Daniel an English Royalist Officer rescues an injured ‘boy’ from the battlefield. Harry or Henrietta turns out to be a 15 year old girl, persecuted by an unnatural father and a step-mother of the usual flavour. Sir Daniel attempts to return Harry to her home, but circumstances result in a marriage between the two.

The book is not badly written, but it is very difficult to get over the heroine’s age and involvement in a sexual relationship with an adult, despite understanding that teenage marriages were commonplace in the 1600’s. It may have been accepted practice, but is it romantic? Alas, not for me, despite ‘the tantalising tip of the pleasure bringer’ making an appearance in the bath tub.

Listening to Fleet Cooper’s narration was an exercise in endurance. Truly, it was awful - inconsistent accents, bizarre pronunciation and just downright odd characterisations. I detected an attempt at Richard Burton in the mix, along with the 1940’s Newsreel voiceover fellow, and a vaudeville villain. A trial.
