Story
When an exotic stranger, Vianne Rocher, arrives in the French village of Lansquenet and opens a chocolate boutique directly opposite the church, Father Reynaud denounces her as a serious moral danger to his flock - especially as it is the beginning of Lent, the traditional season of self-denial. As passions flare and the conflict escalates, the whole community takes sides. Can the solemnity of the church compare with the sinful pleasure of a chocolate truffle?

Story
Vianne Rocher has settled down. Lansquenet-sous-Tannes, the place that once rejected her, has finally become her home. With Rosette, her 'special' child, she runs her chocolate shop in the square, talks to her friends on the river, is part of the community. Even Reynaud, the priest, has become a friend. But when old Narcisse, the florist, dies, leaving a parcel of land to Rosette and a written confession to Reynaud, the life of the sleepy village is once more thrown into disarray....

Publisher's Summary
It isn't often you receive a letter from the dead.
When Vianne Rocher receives a letter from beyond the grave, she has no choice but to follow the wind that blows her back to Lansquenet, the village in south-west France where, eight years ago, she opened up a chocolate shop.
But Vianne is completely unprepared for what she finds there. Women veiled in black, the scent of spices and peppermint tea, and there, on the bank of the river Tannes, facing the square little tower of the church of Saint-Jerôme like a piece on a chessboard - slender, bone-white and crowned with a silver crescent moon - a minaret.
Nor is it only the incomers from North Africa that have brought big changes to the community. Father Reynaud, Vianne's erstwhile adversary, is now disgraced and under threat. Could it be that Vianne is the only one who can save him?

Peaches Review
Great story, but the voice reading it was terrible. If the story wasn’t good I would have left the story half listened to.
It’s terrible how how it can change your enjoyment of a story.
It’s a good lovers story.

Loved being back in the village and picking up with old friends and seeing personalities evolve.
Could smell the peaches and loved the language.
Loved the layers. Sad it is finished.

Not sure this had the right narrator for the female voice too deep and husky

Amazing I loved every word
I loved it... savored my trips to France each night until the final chapters where i couldn't stop listening.
I love the way she puts words together and crates such clear pictures and characters and yet leaves spaces for you to fill in with your own imagination (eg she never does tell what color the cat is I suspect different listeners conjure up different colored cats)
Overall, it was magic I will miss it.
Wonderfully narrated

A must read!
This is a wonderful book written by a brilliant storyteller. Deliciously descriptive, builds suspense and intrigue, and continues the magic of Vianne and her life. Very interesting cultural topic, being experienced the world over currently. I did enjoy the narration of the priest, but missed Joanne's voice as Vianne, narrating her own story.

A compelling story.
I loved the story and couldn't stop listening. I felt while well performed, the narrator of the female voice wasnt suited. The voice of Vianne was too low and husky, I missed Joanne's voice narrating Vianne. The male narration was great and I found myself laughing at times.
