Story
Mary Bennet does not dream of marriage. Much to her mother's horror, Mary is determined not to follow in the footsteps of her elder sisters, Jane (now Mrs Bingley) and Lizzy (now Mrs Darcy). Living at home with her remaining sister, Kitty, and her parents, Mary does not care for fashions or flattery. Her hopes are simple - a roof over her head, music at the piano, a book in her hand and the freedom not to marry the first bachelor her mother can snare for her. But Mrs Bennet is not accustomed to listening to her daughters.

Story
Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

Violette Toussaint is the caretaker at a cemetery in a small town in Bourgogne. Story
The Cleverley family live a gilded life, little realising how precarious their privilege is, just one tweet away from disaster. George, the patriarch, is a stalwart of television interviewing, a 'national treasure' (his words); his wife, Beverley, a celebrated novelist; and their children, Nelson, Elizabeth, Achilles, various degrees of catastrophe waiting to happen. Together they will go on a journey of discovery through the Hogarthian jungle of the modern living where past presumptions count for nothing and carefully curated reputations can be destroyed in an instant.

From the author of The Darcys of Pemberley comes a new story, straight out of the world of Jane Austen and told in a style reminiscent of her six classic novels. Set in nineteenth century Hampshire and Bath, For Myself Alone is the tale of Josephine Walker, a bright, young woman whose quiet life is turned upside-down by an unexpected inheritance. With a tempting fortune of twenty thousand pounds, she's suddenly the most popular girl in town. Yet Jo longs to be valued for who she is, not for her bank balance.

Abridged, but well done.
- By Dean Spilias on 04-07-2016
Publisher's Summary
If Elizabeth Bennet had the washing of her own petticoats, Sarah thought, she would be more careful not to trudge through muddy fields.
It is wash-day for the housemaids at Longbourn House, and Sarah's hands are chapped and bleeding. Domestic life below stairs, ruled tenderly and forcefully by Mrs Hill the housekeeper, is about to be disturbed by the arrival of a new footman smelling of the sea, and bearing secrets.
For in Georgian England, there is a world the young ladies in the drawing room will never know, a world of poverty, love, and brutal war.

One of my favourite stories, tenderly and gently narrated
I’ve always treasured this book, with it’s calm and steady pace, and insight into other times. Emma Fielding narrates the story with the sensitivity it deserves. Perfect listen for troubled times.

Wonderful storytelling
Jo Baker's imaginative retelling of Austen's Pride and Prejudice makes for compelling listening. The invisible servants that managed the comfortable lives of the Bennets, the Darcys and the Bingleys in the original novel are here the stars of the show. The thankless drudgery of their long days, their small hopes and pleasures and their grand disappointments and despairs are wonderfully told. Emma Fieldings reading is strong and nuanced without being obviously theatrical. This is a really great novel which I cannot recommend highly enough.

Fabulous
I just loved this different perspective of Pride and Prejudice. We examine the original story with not much thought being given to the servants. Superb

Came for the lovely, left for the ugly
I bought this book because I love Austens works and the sweet comfort they give in every rereading.
Unfortunately this book is not like that and is undoubtedly too real for me, I prefer my escapism with less ugly reality and to be allowed to keep my rose glasses.
