brilliant book true or not

loved the book and tend to believe that Jack Scrab was a real person and describes the american frontier with honesty and the natural conflicting feelings someone living in two worlds would have had.

I agree with Larry McMurtry - a classic!

I saw the film decades ago but had never read the book. I chose it for my next 'listen' after completing 'Lonesome Dove' (also excellent) and wanting something similar. Well, I agree with Larry McMurtry's assessment at the end of this book: Berger wrote a Masterpiece. However, Mr McMurtry has written a few of those himself, so I guess he should know. The narration is perfect as well, I particularly appreciated the narrator's ability to shift accents, register and cultural affects so flawlessly.
It all made me a bit homesick for Texas - and that is saying something in these current times.

“A Masterpiece”

A captivating story that is very well read here. Definitely among the very best westerns.

Humorous Revisionist Western

Funny, but thoughtful look at the at the old west from all sides. I particulrly enjoyed the perspectives of the life of a plains indian. The fast pace, enormous scope and humorous tone of the book bely the fastidious research that must have gone into it. One can see why Marlon Brando bought the film rights, why Dustin Hoffman jumped at the lead role and why Larry McMurtry wrote the accompanying essay.
