Publisher's Summary

The thrilling, funny sequel to As You Wish.

"A Scotsman and an Englishman fall in love...after the most amazing week of his life, at Dunloch Castle on the banks of Loch Ness, in Scotland. The charming, mysterious Samuel Aiken has turned Declan Ramsay's life upside down. Declan has experienced a remarkable change. He has come to terms with the fact he is bisexual, and he has fallen head-over-heels in love with his boss's son Sam.

However, falling for his boss's son was never going to be an easy path to happiness, mainly because the boss in question is multi-millionaire property tycoon and former MI5 operative, Sir James Aiken.

Sir James is repulsed by his son's homosexuality, and so discovering that his employee Declan Ramsay - the man he installed to run his luxury property rental empire - is in a relationship with Sam, does not go down well.

The lovers cannot hide from the looming presence of Sir James Aiken for long! Soon enough James makes his move, and Declan finds out what he will have to endure to stay with Sam, and what he will have to give to feel worthy of Sam's love."

    Story
    "An addicting series."

The narration: Again, Gary Furlong did a wonderful job narrating. I love his multitude of accents. I definitely will listen to him again.

The story: After the ending of the first book, I immediately bought the audio for Illuminate the Shadows. I was intrigued by the twist regarding Sam’s career. This is book 2 and the series really should be read in order. There will be a spoiler or two if you haven’t read book one. So in order to make their relationship work, Declan needs to join the secret association that Sam and Sam’s father belong to. But first, they are trying to get in a few days of romance after Sam came back from a mission.

Their plans are ruined as Declan is kidnapped and “extreme vetted” by Sir James. The story sort of head hops but I had no problem keeping up. At one point we get the point of view of Sam’s dad and I cannot express my dislike for him enough. He has an intense dislike for his son’s sexuality and he is ruthless and hard. Declan is just beginning his career with this secret group but I am crossing my fingers that he and Sam get out soon.

As Sir James lays out several dubious situations that Declan has been involved in without being aware that there were shady things going on, I began to feel very suspicious of this story. Like there are more secrets yet to be revealed that no one knows about. Unfortunately if there are secrets like that, they weren’t revealed in this book. Instead, I have a lot more questions. Was Declan ever a part of something he can’t remember or is my imagination on high alert? Who is the mysterious he that Sam believes is dead? And is he really dead? Luckily, I know there are two more books in the series and I will be either reading them or listening to them when they make it to audio.

I am very intrigued by the story. I don’t feel like this book was as cutesy as the first one, though there is still some Wesley/Buttercup role playing. There is some progress in Sam and Declan’s relationship as they see how dating is while working together on covert operations. Declan also has to come out to his brother and disclose his relationship with the brother of his brother’s wife. It’s not as confusing at it sounds. 😉 I did enjoy listening to this book, but part of me wanted some answers to my questions. I am looking forward to the next book. In the meantime, I definitely recommend this book and the series.

    Story
    "Exciting, Sexy Intrigue"

I love this series, and I especially love the audiobook versions narrated by Mr. Furlong! This book is incredibly exciting and sexy. In this book, we see Sam and Declan's relationship deepen. Their love and loyalty to each other is incredible...and so is the sex. I especially loved the way Isobel portrayed Declan's A.L.L. "interview." Declan may have come out a little insecure and feeling inadequate to take care of Sam, but I thought he came through with flying colors, and I loved the way he threw James Aiken off his game. The interaction with the younger Declan added a humorous element that I adored.

Gary Furlong's narration makes the audiobook! His voice is wonderful, and he voices the characters consistently and distinctly. His genuine accent and ease with the vernacular are so natural and smooth it's like caramel for the ears.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the author. (Thank you!) This is my honest, voluntary review.

    Story
"Superb narration of a fantastic story!"

It’s fantastic having Sam and Declan finally together here. They feel so comfortable with each other, only to be tested when Declan is taken away. But everything they go through-especially Declan with his “interview” for A.L.L.-just shows how loyal and committed they’ve become to each other even in just a short period of time. If I had to choose a word that explains the theme of this installment of the series, I’d choose “devotion”.

Thanks to the A.L.L. interview and some other incidents, Declan is made to feel unsure about himself and about Sam, and he thinks he’s unable to protect and take care of Sam like Sam can do for him. But thanks to Sam’s dad (James)-the same man who is so thoroughly disappointed in Sam’s sexual orientation and that he’s in a relationship with Declan-we find Declan’s character growing and evolving after he gets to learn more about his new role with A.L.L.

To be honest, other than Declan’s tortuous interview-where we get to find out some interesting tidbits about Declan’s past that even he wasn’t aware of-there’s really not a lot of drama in this story. This one is more about getting more background and further cementing the bond between Declan and Sam…which is pretty darn successful since I can’t ever imagine the two of them not being together. There’s some hints of irregular things happening that involve the bartender across the street from the home they share, but we don’t get much information on that so I’m hoping this is setting the stage for upcoming entries in the series.

The sex is still blazingly hot (just wait until you get to the last scene…), and everything between Declan and Sam continues to deepen and pull you further in to their story. I plan on following them through every book because the author has me fully entranced with their romance, I’m just hoping we get to see more excitement and suspense as the series progresses.

4.5 stars for Illuminate the Shadows, recommended for M/M romance/suspense fans 18+ only due to adult language and explicit M/M sexual content (which is positively delicious!). My interest is also piqued to see what sort of interesting undergarments Sam comes up with next…you’ll see what I mean ;-)

The narration: What is it about a Scottish accent that makes everything that much hotter? Gary Furlong nails it again here in Illuminate the Shadows, with voices that are spot-on, consistent and really made this story come to life for me. His narration is actually so good that I enjoyed the story even more as an audiobook, which has me upping my rating for the story itself to 4.5 stars from the original 4 stars I gave it when I first read the book; the narration is another 5 stars… I’m really looking forward to hearing more!

    Story
"Be careful what you wish for...."
What made the experience of listening to Illuminate the Shadows the most enjoyable?

Great writing, a story that keeps building with new intrigue, a great narrator and great characters. Picking up from "As You Wish", we find Sam back from the rushed trip his father sent him on, and now he has to tell Declan the truth - that Sam's father is ex-MI5, and now runs his own spy agency for which Sam has been working since he was 15. And now that Declan knows, he must join the agency as well in order to stay with Sam, or something bad may happen to him. At first Declan is excited by this, but then he is kidnapped and forced to endure a week of psychological testing including psychotropic drugs that make him imagine all kinds of horrible things so that Sir James can find out what Declan is made of.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love both Declan and Sam equally. The whole thing is more Declan's story than Sam's, but they are both MC's and wonderful characters.

What about Gary Furlong’s performance did you like?

Gary's accents were spot on! Fantastic Scottish brogue for Declan, that I am starting to understand better (I had to relisten to a few lines in the first book, because I wasn't sure what he said). And Sam just sounds so much like Cary Elwes from The Princess Bride, I can picture Westley as Sam.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Be careful what you wish for...

    Any additional comments?

I love this series! I'm on to reading book 3 since it is not out on audio yet. Onward!

    Story
"A Delightful Twist, Hot, Mysterious, and LOL funny"

I LOVE Sam and Declan so hard, and this is a must listen series.

"Illuminate the Shadows" is a continuation of the story in "As You Wish".

Here we find lovers Sam Aiken and Declan Ramsay entwined at the start and what happens after is a great fun ride. Sam's 'job' is revealled and Sam's horrid father Sir James Aiken has new employement in mind for him and Declan in a partnership, but Declan has to pass his interview first, and that interview was such great fun to listen to.

Gary Furlong does such a brilliant job with the narration and gets into the romantic scenes even more than he did in book 1. His Scottish accent for Declan Ramsay is so good you would think he was a native, and hearing him talk dirty during the sex scenes really needs to be heard by anyone who enjoys a good M/M lovescene.

The book ended with Sam and Declan getting reaquainted using roleplay and it was SO HOT. Gary's range of accents just made the scene a knee trembler!

I cannot wait to hear the audio for book 3 "Return to Zero" which will come out soon hopefully.
