Publisher's Summary

Seventeen-year-old Hannah wants to spend her senior year of high school going to football games and Mardi Gras parties. She wants to drive along the oak-lined streets of Louisiana's Garden District and lie on the hot sand of Florida's beaches. She wants to spend every night making memories with her tight-knit group of friends.

The last thing she wants is to fall in love with a girl - especially when that girl is her best friend, Baker.

Hannah knows she should like Wally, the kind, earnest boy who asks her to prom. She should cheer on her friend Clay when he asks Baker to be his girlfriend. She should follow the rules of her conservative community - the rules that have been ingrained in her since she was a child.

But Hannah longs to be with Baker, who cooks macaroni and cheese with Hannah late at night, who believes in the magic of books as much as Hannah does, and who challenges Hannah to be the best version of herself.

And Baker might want to be with Hannah, too - if both girls can embrace that world-shaking, wondrous possibility. Contains mature themes.

Oh my heart

This was such a beautifully written story. It renewed my faith on so many different levels and made me feel things that have been dormant in my heart for such a long time. Heartbreakingly beautiful and honest and full of wisdom. Don’t pass it up.

stomach turning brilliant writing

this was so relatable it made me cry several times. Stomach turning good writing. A genuine example of how conservative religious beliefs ruin lives.

The best

This was by far the best LGBT book I've ever read/listened to. What an amazing story. Can't recommend it enough.

Best sapphic romance I’ve read

- it had the perfect representation of miscommunication between friends to lovers, allows you to sympathise with both characters
- all the sub characters have personalities and growth arcs making it entertaining to see how the group dynamic changes
- so relatable
- the pacing was good and the timeline makes sense, the ending was the cherry on top

Tough listen but not for what you’d think

Trigger warning for the homophobic hate some characters exhibit in their religious school environment so it was tough to listen to. All the while was apprehensive but glad I finished it. Can’t say more coz of spoilers.

Boring and overly dramatic

Was very hard to care about these perfect wealthy teenagers’ lives for the first third of the novel. It got more interesting as it went but then it just seemed needlessly dramatic in parts, and all resolved too easily. The characters had no depth or realism to them. Just very underwhelming. Not sure why it has so many rave reviews.

Great YA novel for questioning Christians and family

This is a terrific coming of age novel addressing some of the big issues facing kids who belong to Christian communities and are dealing with same sex attraction. It is a bit slow to get going but the characters are well drawn and the faith issues are sensitively and honestly dealt with. There is hope here, with a message to work through the inevitable fear and shame.

Heart felt and genuine

So I’m a romantic at heart and by no means a Christian. This book is about both and balances them well so you don’t feel you are being brow beaten either. It takes on some really huge issues and tells about those from people that are in them’s point of view. I’m a fan now of this author. The woman who read the book is amazing, voices were distinct even the male characters. You feel feel like she has genuine passion for what she is reading. I was moved and was excited to continue the story when ever I had to pause for the real world, once I had time to pick it back up. Thank you for this really liked it.

Raw and heartfelt

I’ve now listened to this book multiple times and each time I marvel at Kelly Quindlen’s ability to effectively capture youth and society in a way that tugs at your heart. This story is both heartbreaking and beautiful. I rejoiced and I cried throughout it. The story touched me deeply and I strongly believe this book should be added to your list of ‘must haves’.
