A pull of my heart strings

Dear Nicholas Sparks,
In 1996 I read The Notebook for the first time on a sugar cane farm in Zimbabwe where I was visiting my then boyfriend now husband's friend. We visited Bulawayo, Hwange national Park and Victoria Falls. I remembered sitting in a metal tub for a bath with hot water from the stove and tears streaming down as I read the that incredible love story. In the 22 years since I have not missed one of your stories, with Longest Ride (amazing audiobook) the Notebook and the Wedding as my favourites. And how can I not mention Two by Two, for the love of a parent/father for their child. You have reached into my life and effected decisions unwittingly along the way. At the start of this book I already shed tears, making all the links to my connection of the places you mentioned in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and my birth place South Africa. Like you said no one can understand your connection to Africa and its wildlife than someone born there. Although I am an Australian now, Africa and its wildlife is still part of every breath I take. As our friend and his family lost their farm, had their hearts broken about leaving everything they loved from their land to their country to their hope, I appreciate your way of sharing a fraction of the heartache of what those innocent people went through. Sometimes getting something for free, isn't the solution. But the circle of apartheid will continue (as South Africa is still experiencing) until a major change which for some weird reason I still don't understand, Australia did. Because looking back at the two countries histories, either could have gone the other way. I weep for Southern Africa and pray for the lives lost in farm murders, high jacks, planned criminal activity and lawlessness. I hope compassion and those in power to awake and to start the various countries in the direction of HOPE.
Getting back to Tru and Hope, even though I found the love of my life when I was sixteen, their story is inspiring and makes one appreciate the year, days and minutes you have with your own soul mate.
Thank you for your unique way of writing the story and adding your voice and thoughts to the whole process.
I look forward to your next story, and please never stop writing. For every word you put to paper enhances someone's life, every breath a little bit more.
An avid reader, Christien

Life’s Choices

It’s hard enough to find a soul mate but even harder when you do and circumstances and choices wreck the possibility of that love coming to fruition.
Tru and Hope are interesting characters
Both have obligations that neither can refuse to fulfil
I found the book sad as they had so little time together

Ugghhh! One star because you can't do no stars.

I usually love a good Nicholas Sparks but this was absolutely dreadful. Perhaps it was made worse by the hideous male narrator but the male protagonist (True) is a rubbish character. He is wet, cries too much and falls in love at the speed of light and for no discernible reason (because Hope is equally boring). The African setting seemed pointless and contrived and read like a high school Geography research project. Also (spoiler alert....stop reading now if you still plan to waste 9 hours of your life reading this...) there was absolutely no point in giving Hope ALS at the end. Again, that disease seemed to be hand-picked from media attention and thrown in as a further high school research project- this time for Science. But to be fair by this point they both could have been victims of some silly boating tragedy and I would have been glad to see the back of them. Yuk, yuk, yuk. Do I go back and read a Sparks I enjoyed to clean my palate? Or do I just steer clear from now on?
