Publisher's Summary

From Taylor Caldwell, the world-famous novel about the triumphant story of St. Luke, man of science and Gospel writer

Lucanus grew up in the household of his stepfather, the Roman governor of Antioch. After studying medicine in Alexandria, he became one of the greatest physicians of the ancient world and traveled far and wide through the Mediterranean region healing the sick. As time went on, he learned of the life and death of Christ and saw in him the God he was seeking. To find out all he could about the life and teachings of Jesus, whom he never saw, Lucanus visited all the places where Jesus had been, questioning everyone - including his mother, Mary - who had known him or heard him preach. At last, when he had gathered all information possible, he wrote down what we now know as the Gospel according to St. Luke.

Taylor Caldwell's own travels through the Holy Land and years of meticulous research made Dear and Glorious Physician a fully developed portrait of a complex and brilliant man and a colorful re-creation of ancient Roman life. Here is a story to warm, to inspire, to call forth renewal of faith and love lying deep in each listener's heart.

Somewhat disappointing

I had read this book before and loved it. I suspect now that it was a condensed book I read previously. This one could do with a lot of condensing and removing unnecessary and exaggerated descriptions. The women are all exceptionally beautiful, even as they age, and Lucanus is ‘perfect’ in every way... blonde, brainy, blue eyed, tall, strong, chiseled, athletic, excelling in martial arts to a point where his movements are faster than the speed of eyes. These aspects stop the book being classic and outstanding, in my view.
There are interesting parts which align with Scriptural and historical description, and also mystical, fictional ‘extra Biblical’ events which take away from the story in my opinion. These include miracles like the healing of Ramus’ eyes and the waking of the dead child.
I enjoyed the detailed information about the Roman empire and it’s influence on the world at that time. I enjoyed the characters of Diodorus, Keptah, Rubria, Aurelia and Cusa, his dear teacher.
The medical terms are interesting but I’m not sure Ms Caldwell wasn’t using 20th century descriptions and names for ancient illnesses. All round I much prefer the book on Paul of Tarsus ‘The Great Lion of God’ to this one. This narration was very good nevertheless, and I would have wished a classier book on Paul Boehmer.
