About this listen
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a trilogy about the land we’re drawn to, the family we learn to cherish, and the people we long to love...
Book One of The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy
Dark Witch
With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends.
Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations - and where her destiny awaits.
Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives. When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horsemen, he’s three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package.
Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself - and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope - and love - alive...

The story was OK, though perhaps not one of NR's best, but I'm a horselover and that redeemed it to some extent.
Still considering whether to get the next book in the series. If it has the same narrator, perhaps not.
Over dramatic and grating narration

It didn^t help that the narrator tended to over-dramatise. It might have been better if she^d followed the natural ebb & flow of the storyline more, with more subtlety (!!) & more “normal” peaks/ troughs, plus definitely fewer/ less-intense climaxes? Shrug, the material was there for her to follow, but she just overdid it.
All of that said, I enjoyed the story & do still intend to buy the 2nd book, particularly as it has a different narrator (!) I strongly recommend all prospective purchasers LISTEN TO THE 5 MINUTE SAMPLE BEFORE BUYING this book; only then will you know if the narrator is your cup of tea.
A good read, though perhaps not NR”s best

But Nora Roberts is amazing and I’m looking forward to the next book
Loved the story

loved it

Bad points: a little cheesy and predictable, main character was a bit too optimistic for me
Good if you like Nora’s Irish

I didn’t enjoy the narrator’s accents at all, or her way of talking as Branna throughout.
Difficult to know who was speaking at times. I had to listen to this at a faster speed the first time, slowed it down for the second time of listening.
Read a few times before and will be read again, but listening whilst doing other things is a great enjoyment, if I can ignore the horrible accent.

BOOK REVIEW
Though this is similar to other trilogies by Ms Roberts, as it takes certain actions/happenings from other trilogies, it still stands alone with its sheer ability to draw you into the story and its characters.
Throw in the magical aspect that is happening and even though this is a three book storyline, which I usually hate, you cannot help but be drawn in and enjoy the read.
Iona and Boyle are a great pairing but what I enjoy the most is the way they balance each other out, once Boyle catches up to Iona’s runaway personality that is.
Iona is an American who has come to Ireland on her grandmothers urging to find her destiny.
On first setting eyes on Boyle she is gone, head over heels and has no problem letting him know it.
This flummoxes down to earth Boyle in a big way.
Loved the to-ing and fro-ing between them.
I do find this authors earlier trilogies her better ones.
I didn’t enjoy the narrator’s accents at all.

A Compelling story slightly spoilt by the Narrator
