Publisher's Summary

Synopsis: Introducing Audiobook One in the Logan & Kayla saga of the Checkmate series from a secret duo of romance authors who teamed up under the USA Today best-selling pseudonym, Kennedy Fox! This second-chance romance will sweep you off your feet from the very first chapter, and have you craving donuts by the final chapter! Are you ready to play the final game?

Logan Knight is a real life knight in shining armor. A detective godsend in a sleek black suit has me thinking less than secretive thoughts. Brooding and mysterious, he's the kind of guy every girl instantly notices. Between his seductive smirk and charming good looks, it's no wonder I can't help the way he makes me feel whenever I'm near him. Too bad he's unavailable - or so he says. He thinks I'm a do-gooder who shouldn't get involved with a guy like him. His past is messy, and his relationships just add to that. He insists the timing is all wrong and he's devoted to his career, but I don't buy that excuse for a second. I see the way his body tenses and his jaw ticks every time another guy is around me. He just won't admit it, but I'm more determined than ever to show him what he's missing. I'm a devoted animal rescuer and I'll risk everything to save them, but when a dramatic turn of events puts both our lives at risk, I'm positive Logan will write me off for good. But when he asks for my help with a personal crisis, I know it's my last chance to finally show him I can handle anything he throws my way - messy past and all. He might think he has me all figured out.

You Donut Want to Miss This Book!

What did you love best about Checkmate: This is Dangerous?

Logan and Kayla of course! They have such amazing chemistry and I loved how organic their relationship felt. They were both very relatable and perfectly imperfect.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Checkmate: This is Dangerous?

One word... donuts. I don't think I will EVER look at donuts the same way again! I loved how "creative" the authors were with incorporating Kayla's love of the donut and other fun activities! ;) The imagery is both laugh out loud hilarious and so very sexy and delicious!

Which character – as performed by Lia Langola – was your favorite?

I really loved Logan! He is so closed off and mysterious when we first meet him. Watching Kayla break down those walls made for the perfect slow burn friends to lovers romance. I am always impressed by Lia Langola's narration, especially her male voices. She brings so much depth and emotion to the characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I both laughed and cried with this one! The ending especially made my heart break!

Any additional comments?

Speaking of that ending, listeners should note that this is part 1 of Logan and Kayla's story, so it does end in a cliffhanger. The next book, Checkmate: This is Beautiful, is available now though (I think the audio is coming), so you don't have to wait for the conclusion. Just be aware that this story is a duet.

My Two Pennies

I am hooked on Lia Langola and her narrations. This woman captivates me from beginning to the very end. The emotions that are put into each line has you feeling these characters more then you thought you could, I'm hanging on each and every word spoken. I have never wanted donuts as much as I have while being in Logan and Kayla's world, the feels for their story is unbelievable and I just can't get enough. Kennedy Fox is one helluva team and with each book in this series they top themselves. Logan has a bit of a dark past and when you find out what happened it will absolutely break your heart and you just want to be right there by his side for moral support. Kayla hasn't had an easy past herself and yet she is such an incredible giver and so open hearted. The chemistry between the two of them is undeniable and you want to just scream to give into the feelings already. I was consumed by this book and then BAM! Yep, jaw dropped event that had me saying WHAT?! You know what I'm talking about, those love to hate cliffhangers. Have no fear because the final book to this series and book 2 for Logan and Kayla This Is Beautiful is available now. I know that I'm jumping into the final book because this is a MUST READ series. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

Holy Cliffhanger Batman - but Loved It!

I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. This is another great duet from the author duo Kennedy Fox, and excellently performed by Lia Langola. This series of duets just keeps getting better. I thought the endings/cliffhangers of the first two duets was nail biting, but this one wins the prize. I so can't wait for the final book to be released on audiobook, otherwise I may have to find time to read with my eyes instead of listening while multitasking. I'm truly loving the world Kennedy Fox has created and look forward to more by this author duo. I highly recommend this audiobook and series.

Intriguing

Let's begin with, there is a cliffhanger! Logan, war hardened and with a past; lives day by day, breathing but not living, until the day he finally lets go and allows a dog loving firecracker into his life.

Cheeky little scenes, quirky comments is the essence of our 2 main characters and also their mutual friends with their own individually liked personalities, opens this story right up and allowed me to enjoy the ride.

If only, I'm a little lost as to the name of this book, it doesn't seem to match the storyline. But maybe that will be more obvious to me in book 2 and bring that story on!

My Thoughts on Checkmate: This is Dangerous

This one took a moment for me to get into it, but once I did, I didn't want to stop. The more I discovered about Logan the more likeable he became for me. And Kayla was too sweet not to like.

They both have secrets and I'm glad everything doesn't get revealed in this story so I can have something more besides hopefully a HEA for these two in the next book.

The ending was very unexpected, but is a great setup for whatever will come next.

Once again the narrator did an great job. I loved all the different voices and personalities she managed to convey with the secondary characters.

ha

So this is the first book that I have read/Listened to by this author and Omg I'm so in love with it & I need book 2 stat. Good thing it was released this week now I just have to get it. I will say that I screamed NO at my phone when it ended because it does end on a cliffhanger. Ugh not a big fan of those but I'm sure the wait is so worth it. I listen to books, because I can get a better feel & connection to the story, as long as the story and the narrator mesh great together in this case both are amazingly great together. The story line and the characters are very relatable. It grows and flows great together. I had been in Kayla’s spot at one point in my life. In love with someone who doesn't feel the same way but still did the friends with benefits. I had tried to move on a few times and it never failed they would somehow send my head spinning on a roller coaster. I finally broke free from that crazy ride. So as I listen to the story, I really felt like I was right there going through it all with Logan. This author & narrator sucked me in and I didn't want it to leave this world. This is hitting all the feelers and more. The narrator Lia Langola is brilliant and brought the soul to this book. She gave it a new life. I am truly amazed by her talents when narrating this story. I hope to hear more from Lia Langola and to read more of the Checkmate series thank you for this 5 star Read one click today!

Absolutely Amazing!!!!

I loved listening to this story so much!! Its such a beautifully written book with a great storyline and characters! I read it first, but sometimes its fun to listen to a book too. Lia Langola is so great at doing both parts, her voice is so easy to listen to. She makes the funny parts really stand out. I will definitely choose to listen to more books read by her!

I still want to hear more!

Logan and Kayla are two people with their own ideas about relationships. Logan does not want a commitment because of his last relationship. The only s trying commitment he has is to his daughter, whom he would do anything for. Kayla does not date men she works with. This rule has worked for her, until now. Logan has set his eyes on Kayla but has not made a strong move. When he sees another man interested in Kayla, he ups his game. Kayla has always liked Logan but she also stuck to her co worker rule. She starts to break that rule as Logan gets closer.

This story follows the budding romance of Logan and Kayla as well as the relationship Logan has with his daughter that he is so desperate to continue. It tugs at your heart strings. It plays with your emotions as you feel Logan and Kayla's anger, pain, rejection and growing love. It leaves you wanting more.....now!

Lia Langola is perfect in this sweet romance. Ms Langola's voice can be sweet for Kayla and just as husky for Logan. She brings the characters to life and helps you really feel as the characters are feeling. There is no problem knowing who is talking, as Ms Langola expertly has a different voice/ pitch for each character. This book is a listen not to miss!
