Story
When The Far Pavilions was first published 19 years ago, it moved the critic Edmund Fuller to write this: "Were Miss Kaye to produce no other book, The Far Pavilions might stand as a lasting accomplishment in a single work comparable to Margaret Mitchell's achievement in Gond With the Wind." From its beginning in the foothills of the towering Himalayas, M. M. Kaye's masterwork is a vast, rich, and vibrant tapestry of love and war that ranks with the greatest panoramic sagas of modern fiction.

What a waste of time
- By Richard on 21-06-2019
Publisher's Summary
In 1942, Charlotte Gray, a young Scottish woman, goes to Occupied France on a dual mission: to run an apparently simple errand for a British special operations group and to search for her lover, an English airman who has gone missing in action. In the small town of Lavaurette, Sebastian Faulks presents a microcosm of France and its agony in 'the black years'. Here is the full range of collaboration, from the tacit to the enthusiastic, as well as examples of extraordinary courage and altruism. Through the local resistance chief Julien, Charlotte meets his father, a Jewish painter whose inspiration has failed him. In a series of shocking narrative climaxes in which the full extent of French collusion in the Nazi holocaust is delineated, Faulks brings the story to a resolution of redemptive love. In the delicacy of its writing, the intimacy of its characterisation and its powerful narrative scenes of harrowing public events, Charlotte Gray is a worthy successor to Birdsong.

Rich book, poor read.
Overly luvvie delivery which occasionally bordered on the comic. The narrator’s voice for Charlotte might have reminded some older readers of Stanley Baxter’s female characters, and there were moments - especially the more emotionally charged ones - where it was like listening to an Alan Partridge voice over.

Such a compelling tale
I decided to read this book as I’d enjoyed the movie so very much. This book far exceeds the movie. Which is saying something. Mr Faulkes’ character development and detail lays such a profoundly clear idea of what is going on from so many people’s angles. The utter humanness of it. The heart breaking truth of it all. His honesty and gift as a wordsmith somehow forced you to be brave and hear things, things you know actually happened , and bear it. I loved this book and would rate it among one of the best I’ve ever read . Bravo bravo bravo.
