Publisher's Summary

Damen is a warrior hero to his people and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos, but when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.

Beautiful, manipulative and deadly, his new master, Prince Laurent, epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.

For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else.

At times good, at times awkward

Captive Prince is one of my favourite books ever and I had to listen to the audiobook. The narrator, Stephen Bel Davies, was a good choice for the most part, but there were times his narration wasn't that great. I loved his voice for Damen but felt his voice for Laurent was too old. Laurent's only 20 years old but he sounds in his 40s sometimes. His voice for The Regent was great, but then his voice for Nicaise was wayyyyyyyyyy too deep. Nicaise is a 14 year old boy but his voice sounds like a 50 year old man. Was quite disappointed by this. Also at times it felt like Bel Davies was just reading the book as opposed to performing the book. Some of my favourite book narrators really get into the story and it feels like they're acting it out for you; sometimes Bel Davies did that but more often than not it felt like it was just being read to me. I could have just read the book myself to be honest.

Not great

There isn't much action in it. There is however a lot of mentioning of slaves, rape and pedophilia.

Fabulous introduction to the series

This book does a great job setting the scene for the 2 following novels. The pace is slow and the characters and politics are well developed.
I think the narration is very solid. The narrator manages to distinguish the main characters' dialogue fairly well.

Terrible narrator

The book itself is definitely not for everyone. Reading from third person is already a challenge, let alone such an intense book. Unfortunately the narrator made this unlistenable and I ended up reading it myself at chapter 4. His voice is dull and almost robotic. Siri could’ve done better. I’ve been enticed enough by the ending to pick up the second one. We shall see how it goes :)

Not the best

Didn't like voice actor's narration. The story had little plot going on until the second half.

I have thoughts.

This book I found a great read apart from the rape scene that seemed to be glorified.

The book ended in way that makes me want to listen to the next in the series but I am troubled by the glorification of sexual abuse.

The writer is clearly very very talented, I think a sensitivity editor may have been needed to re word those few scenes that seemed to blur the lines a little bit to much. These are just my thoughts

The narration was fantastic.
