ONE OF THE GUARDIAN'S 100 BEST BOOKS OF THE 21st CENTURY

Adapted into a major film starring Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Saoirse Ronan.

'A person is, among all else, a material thing, easily torn and not easily mended'

On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house.

Watching her too is Robbie Turner who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By the end of that day, the lives of all three will have been changed for ever, as Briony commits a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone.

Complex and simple together, thought provoking yet something you know.

My second McEwan book, what a clever author can do with a simple story. I like the 40’s era and enjoyed the description phrases around clothing furnishings and people. Atonement couldn’t have been a more appropriate name for the book.

Highly recommended. Excellent narration.

Very enjoyable narration. The story is a little slow to get going, but develops into a very absorbing tale with very interesting and likeable characters. Highly recommended and much better than the movie.

Another wonderful story by Ian McEwen

Such a beautiful tragic story. The characters and their struggles exquisitely brought to life. The narration was absolutely perfect.

Great story!

Be prepare to a emotional, sad and naked story. About relationships, war, lies and misunderstandings.

Needs to be listened to

This is a book that I have tried to read for years. After several failed attempts, I almost gave up and thought it wasn’t the book for me. Until I listened to it. Ian McEwan’s writing needs to be HEARD. It’s so beautiful and visual. Absolutely stunning. One of my favourite books of all time.

Spectacular

A lyrical and kaleidoscopic exploration of youth, innocence and morality. what elevates this novel to a masterpiece is it's telling of multiple perspectives, each shaping the reader's in turn. Dominant voices develop then recede and we are left with the one narrator who has manipulated the story, as McEwan began in the book's genesis. That said, it is also a wonderful story. Unlike Briony's first unpublished novella, this book packs pace. Loved it.

Takes a while to get going but worth a listen

Moving story about youth, love and a mistake that has lifelong consequences. Beautifully written and a convincing narration with a good range of voices. I especially liked the narrators rendition of the soldiers that accompany Robbie on their trek to Dunkirk.
