Hannes Böhm lebt in dem Industrieviertel, das die Berliner Feuerland nennen, weil hier die Schornsteine der Industrie qualmen. Als eine Art selbst ernannter Fremdenführer verdient er sich ein kleines Zubrot, indem er neugierigen Bürgern die Armut und die Not in den Hinterhäusern zeigt. Bei einer solchen Gelegenheit lernt er Alice kennen, die als Tochter des Kastellans im Berliner Stadtschloss wohnt. Doch als die Märzunruhen 1848 ausbrechen, als sich der Konflikt zwischen dem preußischen König und den Aufständischen zuspitzt und gemäßigte Kräfte nur schwer Gehör finden, scheint es für die Gefühle, die Hannes und Alice für einander entwickeln, keine Zukunft mehr zu geben.
