Venezianer pflegten es zu ignorieren, weil man wusste, dass solche Dinge sich nur mit "conoscenze" regeln ließen, als da waren: Bekannte, Freunde, Beziehungen und geschuldete Gefälligkeiten.Als der Beamte kurz darauf ums Leben kommt, ahnt Brunetti sofort, dass es sich um keinen Unfall handelt. Er beginnt mit Nachforschungen, die ihn schließlich zu einem weiteren ungeklärten Mord führen, einem Rechtsanwalt, der am helllichten Tag erschossen wurde. Brunetti kommt einem Netz von Korruption, Wucher und Drogen auf die Schliche, aus dem es keinen einfachen Ausweg gibt.
