Story
Evans interweaves a broad narrative of the war’s progress with viscerally affecting personal testimony from a wide range of people - from generals to front-line soldiers, from Hitler Youth activists to middle-class housewives. The Third Reich at War lays bare the dynamics of a nation more deeply immersed in war than any society before or since. Fresh insights into the conflict’s great events are here, from the invasion of Poland to the Battle of Stalingrad to Hitler’s suicide in the bunker.

Publisher's Summary
Fatherland is set in an alternative world where Hitler has won the Second World War. It is April 1964 and one week before Hitler's 75th birthday. Xavier March, a detective of the Kriminalpolizei, is called out to investigate the discovery of a dead body in a lake near Berlin's most prestigious suburb.
As March discovers the identity of the body, he uncovers signs of a conspiracy that could go to the very top of the German Reich. And, with the Gestapo just one step behind, March, together with an American journalist, is caught up in a race to discover and reveal the truth - a truth that has already killed, a truth that could topple governments, a truth that will change history

Great yarn
I first read Fatherland 25 years ago but had forgotten most of the story. Well worth listening to again though. The story is imaginative (and horrifying), the plotting is excellent and the pace picks up slowly but surely as the story progresses aided by Michael Jayston's brilliant narration. I changed the pace of the audio to 1.25 times normal speed towards the end and it really adds to the growing tension and menace of the final chapters.

Creative, real and raw
An amazing story and perhaps a sad reflection on a society where the unjust thrive but a glimmer of hope for a better life thrives. Not sure if I liked the ending, but a great read..

Frightening truth
Twists and turns in an unlikely but completely believable post war Germany. It was very hard to listen to at times especially when horrendous truths were laid out in a shocking, calmly ordered list, truths we well know but still bring tears. An amazingly well constructed plot as we’d expect from Robert Harris, the master of historical fiction.

Enjoyable storytelling and world building
This is an entertaining counterfactual tale of Nazi Germany in the late 1960s. Hitler, the modern Satan, is alive and ruling the Fourth Reich across most of Europe.
The story revolves around a murder case, a detective, and the deeply buried secret of The Holocaust.
I enjoyed the movie with Rutger Hauer but the book adds more background and has an alternate ending. It includes a love story, high-risk adventures, betrayals, and the intrigue of discovering history’s greatest crime.

Gripping story. Horrifying and necessary.
The narrator's voice and tone give the story the depth and darkness it deserves.

What if the Nazi's got away with the holocaust?
A great idea for a novel. This book gives a bit of an insight into what a Nazi win would possibly have been like. It starts with a mysterious death, but soon gets mysterious and dangerous for March.
I was pleasantly surprised to explore the insight into the plot with a Germany that has hidden the holocuast from the world.
There were a few small strings that the author dangled but didn't expand on further, especially the outcome for the UK. I got my interest piqued, but he didn't expand on this which bothered me.
I would have really liked an epilogue.
