Story
On the brink of defeat, Hitler commissioned 10,000 V2s - ballistic rockets that carried a one-ton warhead at three times the speed of sound, which he believed would win the war. Dr Rudi Graf who, along with his friend Werner von Braun, had once dreamt of sending a rocket to the moon, now finds himself in November 1944 in a bleak seaside town in Occupied Holland, launching V2s against London. No one understands the volatile, deadly machine better than Graf, but his disillusionment with the war leads to him being investigated for sabotage.

The English survived repeated epidemics and famines, one failed invasion and two successful ones, two civil wars, a series of violent religious reformations and counter-reformations, and confrontations with two of the most powerful monarchs on earth, Louis XIV of France and Philip II of Spain.

Story
Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought - and whose outcome was in greater doubt - than one might imagine. This is the war that Americans on the home front would have read about had they had access to previously censored testimony.

Great yarn
I first read Fatherland 25 years ago but had forgotten most of the story. Well worth listening to again though. The story is imaginative (and horrifying), the plotting is excellent and the pace picks up slowly but surely as the story progresses aided by Michael Jayston's brilliant narration. I changed the pace of the audio to 1.25 times normal speed towards the end and it really adds to the growing tension and menace of the final chapters.

What if the Nazi's got away with the holocaust?
A great idea for a novel. This book gives a bit of an insight into what a Nazi win would possibly have been like. It starts with a mysterious death, but soon gets mysterious and dangerous for March. I was pleasantly surprised to explore the insight into the plot with a Germany that has hidden the holocuast from the world. There were a few small strings that the author dangled but didn't expand on further, especially the outcome for the UK. I got my interest piqued, but he didn't expand on this which bothered me. I would have really liked an epilogue.

Formidable story, gripping and frighteningly realistic
I remember seeing a movie about alternative history, world in which Germany won the war and Hitler triumphed with his sick ideas and philosophy. Great Reich without Poland, Russia, Baltic States and all other Slavic countries. And without Jews.
Now I found a book on which that movie was based. And the story is much more terrifying and only now I realise that movie didn't do it justice.
Germany 1960s. Grey world full of uniformed people, buildings bigger and talked then anywhere else and in their shadows police investigation. One corpse leads to another, and another, and another. An American journalist, an officer of SS, friends, traitors, corruption, betrayal, death. And at the fringes, slowly coming to the front, dug out from the past the terrible truth: what has happened to all the Jews from Europe.
Gripping. And terrifyingly good.

Reads like a vintage Le Carre
The alternate history only provides the platform on which is built an excellent story of subterfuge and pursuit. This is not a WWII novel- it is much more a Cold War novel of Le Carre - think of A Small Town In Germany. Jayston is terrific as always - and this is altogether a dark and thought provoking listen - particularly so in these dark times...

What if Hitler had won?
What a treat to read an old fashioned chronologically organised story. I have become really tired of the current fashion for butterfly books which flit flit flit. It was really satisfying to hear March tell his tale without having to work out the timeline or which narrator was in charge. These are definitely more confusing in audiobooks. The moment when Krebs understands the extermination programme was when I really saw how the people had been fooled. There's not much room for personal attachment in this book, you don't really mind what happens to the characters, it's a bigger picture story, but well written and interesting.
