About this listen

Ruby is the most violently disturbed patient ever admitted to Drummersgate Asylum, high on the bleak moors of northern England. With no improvement after two years, Dr. Jack McGowan finally decides to take a risk and hypnotizes her - with terrifying consequences.

A horrific dark force is now unleashed on the entire medical team, as each in turn attempts to unlock Ruby's shocking and sinister past. Who is this girl? And how did she manage to survive such unimaginable evil? Set in a desolate ex-mining village, where secrets are tightly kept and intruders hounded out, their questions soon lead to a haunted mill, the heart of darkness, and the father of lies.

Simply amazing and the build up was perfect. It took a while though to get used to the author's writing style. It was a bit hard to follow in the start, switching back and forth between present, a year ago, two years ago, many many years ago. But it was all worth it.

I really enjoyed this book and have ensured I have the next one ready to go when I get to the end. Great story, enthralling read!

I've had limited success with titles from the audible members catalogue, but this was great. An intriguing story, well written and performed. Definitely recommend to any fan of supernatural horror. Be mindful there are some themes of horrific child abuse but it's handled reasonably skilfully without gratuitous descriptions.

A winner from the plus catalogue!

It's been awhile since something - book, movie, tv show - kept me awake like this. Not only in the sense that it was spooky and I expected shadows and dark figures to populate my house at night, but the story was so engaging that I finished it within a day.
I have favourite authors in different genres, but hadn't yet found a favourite horror author. I think Sarah England might just be my favourite horror writer. Can't wait to get into her other stories!
Added to the great writing, the narration by Henrietta Meire was spot on - different voices and subtly different accents, and suuuper creeepy when necessary. Her demon voice had me on edge.

Loved it!

As I often like to kick start a review with: I read a hell of a lot of horror and have done so for about 40 years. I'd say it's predominantly extreme horror these days, although I occasionally stray into other sub-genres.
I stumbled across Father of Lies last year, thought it sounded interesting and dived right in. Boy was I glad I did! As soon as I finished it I was straight into the rest of the trilogy (plus The Owlmen). Within the space of six months, I managed to get through 7 books by Sarah; yeah, she's that good. this trilogy and Baba Lenka have been my faves.
The narrator is brilliant, the story creepy as hell, the characters are well thought and if is your first book by Sarah, you're in for a real treat. 5/5

the book that got me hooked

Darkly disturbing is right. Good ideas but the plot was hard to follow, even though the narrator did a good job with the various characters.

Intriguing but so confusing

The story is disturbing and I really wanted to enjoy it however found it difficult to follow the plot as an audiobook.
The narrator spoke too fast and I found her "scary" voice comical and probably best suited to a childrens books. Audible need to improve their casting.
Overall a great story and I'm keen to read the book for a better experience.

Doesn't seem to work well as an audiobook
