Publisher's Summary

Fate of the Fallen is the start of a brand-new adventure from New York Times best-selling author Kel Kade.

Not all stories have happy endings.

Everyone loves Mathias. Naturally, when he discovers it’s his destiny to save the world, he dives in headfirst, pulling his best friend, Aaslo, along for the ride.

However, saving the world isn’t as easy, or exciting, as it sounds in the stories. The going gets rough, and folks start to believe their best chance for survival is to surrender to the forces of evil, which isn’t how the prophecy goes. At all. As the list of allies grows thin and the friends find themselves staring death in the face, they must decide how to become the heroes they were destined to be or, failing that, how to survive.

Fun Adventure Fantasy

Plot was a bit light and silly at times, but the world and characters are interesting and entertaining - particularly the POV of the Gods and reaper (dead human that serves the Gods). The narration is absolutely amazing.

Where’s those typical scenes?

Audiobooks are exciting, the different amount of emotions you go thru, to feed your curiosity of the journey. When I started listening to this audiobook, I wanted this book to be part of another series, but after 10mins, I was hooked, another series to enjoy. I must confess, Kel Kade has my full attention, not once so far, thru five audiobooks, have I heard a typical scenario...and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Thanks Nick... doing a great job!!

So disappointing

Unfortunately, this time Kel Kade fell flat with her story. I can see why she originally dropped this one to start the Rezkin series.

The characters and storyline were boring :(

The forester thing was great, but I would have preferred actually doing something with it and building more interest at the start and more of a character relationship.

Some of the characters were too close to the ones in Rezkin series. Eg. Tezza is a mix between two of the women in the Rezkin series. I do wonder if it may have been different if Nick wasn’t narrating. The main character was too vanilla.

Her other series had me needing to listen every word and wanting the next book, whereas this book had me drifting elsewhere and not hearing a word and not caring.

I know the head and the horse were supposed to be humorous but the were just plain annoying. Matthias wasn’t a golden boy, he was obnoxious!!

I have no interest in the next book, unless they tie into the Rezkin series somehow.

Funny, morbid and utterly entertaining

The single worst thing about this book is that it ends.
The story was funny as hell and the plot great and kept me guessing where it would head next.
The voice acting.. oh my goodness.. Mr Podehl really brought this story to life for me, even his ladies voices made me forget it was a bloke narrating.

Engrossing

I loved this.
looking forward to more of this story.
characters were introduced steadily, relationships formed understood and the plot grew steadily. momentum built, and the depth of intrigue plunged and had me not wanting to miss a thing.
of course, getting to the end of this book, with so much yet to be told, is hard.
So I hope Kel Kade is publishing the next book already.

The sequel will be better

The book is solid, as usual from Kel Kade. Stands out from the trash that can be found in the audible fantasy section. Unique concepts and a lot of nicely executed twists on classic formulas.

The real issue with this book is that it takes way too long to get going. I really struggled to get through the first half. Things really started to pick up in the final third and the ending was very strong. The sequel is going to be very good if she can pull it off.

The characters are likeable and quirky in the right ways and the main character is just the right kind of guy. The gods were especially interesting throughout the story and added a good amount of flavour in between the main storyline. A stroke of genius really and the story would not be the any good without them.

All in all, it’s classic Kel Kade. Very comfortable read and easy to digest. I recommend it but be prepared for a slow start.

great story, cant wait for the next

the only confusing bit to me was how he couldn't figure out how to whisper when talking to himself. I mean u think he'd figure it out after the first couple people caught him. other than that, the narrator was awesome as always, and the story is intriguing. I hope the author goes back to Kings Dark Tidings before continuing this series but I wouldn't be mad either way lol

Worth a listen

I have listened to the authors other series, Kong’s dark tidings, which I enjoyed a lot. This story is unrelated but has similar writing style. Nick Podehl crushes the performance as always. The story is good all though I felt that it was left a bit unfinished even for the first book of a series. Kind of ends abruptly as a major revelation is revealed. Has that weird, smart humor from KDT that I enjoyed. Still I wish that the author would have finished the KDT series first before starting another....

Disappointed

I'm a fan of the Kings Dark TIdings series. They're not perfect but i've enjoyed the series and plan to continue it. This book; however, was a huge disappointment. I'm super confused at the high ratings. This book took off like a shot. No build up, no character development, no world building. Best friends, savior of the world, lopped off head becomes a talking jester, gods of fertility???? This book appears to have been thrown together as quickly as possible to take advantage of the success with kings dark tidings. It was 12 hrs and may have been a good book if it were 25 hrs. we'll never know.

Just ok. Gets a little weird at the end.

This book has a great concept but near the end the author seems to just add more and more oddities. They are things they seem as though if they were introduced a little earlier would be more character developing and less “oh now you can do this ...” too quickly a couple of the characters change from their initial personalities taking away from what initially made them interesting.

its just OK - worth the credit - COULD be fun

This book has a fun idea in there somewhere, but the author was either rushed by the publisher or she rushed herself to get it out the door. The character development was lacking and there are way too many perspectives and plot lines to manage in such a short novel - think Stormlight Archive or The Stand number of plot lines and perspectives written in about 1/4 the words - its just too much for the amount of time.

Where it got really rough for me was about the 8 hour mark (4 hours remaining in the story) It was almost like the author had an "Oh S***" moment and realized she hadn't gotten in all the stuff she wanted yet and just needed to speed things up and cram in a bunch of stuff to get it finished off - if you've read the Iron Druid Chronicles series - you'll understand what i mean in comparing it to the 9th novel in that series - if you haven't read that series, go read it - it is a ton of fun.

All in all - i will read the second book to see if she can clean it up - there are numerous series out there where the first book was rough - and I have hopes that with some constructive feedback by her fans the second will come off a little better - she just needs to give it a bit more time.

Throughout the entire novel I was hooked. there was not a moment where I was bored or distracted away. The story exciting and engaging while the performance was amazing as I have come to expect from Nick Podehl. this combination led to a very enjoyable experience in the story.

I love this book.

It's an amazing new addition to the library of an amazing author. The characters are great and none of them come off as trite or annoying. I'm particularly impressed with how good the Reaylin 2.0 (Tessa) character turned out to be. It is clear that the tale the author is spinning for us is a work of passion, and the ending leaves me only wanting more.

Another must read from Kel Kade

To start off the bat, this story doesn't take place in the same universe as dark tidings. Upsetting as it is, the story non the less is a brilliant one. It is one that I desperately want to share my personal favourite parts but can't because this book is one filled with major spoilers that effect everything about the book.

From as early as chapter 3 world changing events happen that cause me to stop and actually consider what the hell just happened. This doesn't happen once but several times throughout the book and I'm still shocked by the significance of those moments. They're are the kind of events you normally see as a cliffhanger for the end of a book.

Speaking of...

A number of people have stated that the book's ending feels like it ends abruptly and this makes the ending disappointing - which I understand but disagree. The unfortunate thing is I cannot share the ending without major spoilers. Series changing spoilers.

Yes you heard me, this is a start of a new series of books and i NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW!!!

For a recommendation of those looking for similar books is Tad Williams - the dragon bone chair.- The first ten chapters of the books starts off slowly but I promise that you will enjoy that if you enjoyed this.

Couldn't stop listening

An excellent book from Kel Kade and great narration from Nick Podehl as always.

Amazing adventures await that enthral the read/listener. Rarely does a book make you genuinely laugh that you pause it for a moment.

Anyone looking for something new that takes a new take on heros I would stress to them to listen to this book.

Human gods

Great story, took me back to the early technicolour films of the 70’s where gods set heroes their challenges. Made me think we imagine gods in our own likeness so our earthly character entertains us.

It gets better as it goes along

Originally thougt it was part of the dark tidings series, so a little confused at the start but at after double checking and realising it is a new series it is an enjoyable listen; and as always the narrator is very good at helping you distinguish between the characters and help you feel immersed in the story. Predictable at times and some weirdness, but overall enjoyable.

I enjoyed the story and the performance. Unfortunately it is very much part one from my perspective and did not progress the story of the first set of books. Same Verse and creatures etc. But not connected. Oh well I will have to wait for the next one.
