Il tema principale è la conversione al cristianesimo di una santa che viene ricordata per aver fondato il primo ospedale per i poveri. Pur presentando alcune inesattezze storiche, il libro è piuttosto aderente alle fonti ed 1948, ed è un'eccellente ricostruzione della vita delle catacombe e delle persecuzioni contro i cristiani.
