Tales of the UnEGGspected.

Tales of the UnEGGspected. Cracking yokes of bad eggs, and twisted tails of porkies told, scratching the surface of the final straws in the animal farm of modern battery farmed urbane dystopia.

A real cracker!

I really loved these stories! They remind me of Roald Dahl's 'Tales of the Unexpected.'

The readings are excellent and the stories first rate.

I think this audio book would appeal to most people.

Requires a taste for dry British wit.

I was unfamiliar with Crackanory. This is very dry British humor. I am not a fan. The plot thread the humor is hung on is both implausible to an extreme and difficult to follow the logic behind.

If you enjoy humor at another’s expense, open fly jokes and strange plot twists then this could be great for you.

5 short comical stories - all great fun

All five stories are highly entertaining in this comical collection by various authors. The stories run for approximately 15-20 each, making them a nice quick listen while you’re on the go.
In the first story, Phil accidentally has his dry cleaner assassinated on a dark web vengeance site called Criss Cross, only to find he now has to reciprocate. The tongue in cheek narration by Robert Bathurst is matched with great voice work.
The second story is an outrageous supernatural ghost story. Narrator Katherine Parkinson is hysterically funny. She also puts on some great character voices, adding to her humorous reading.
John Robins reads The Character Assassin about successful author Rachel, who lives alone with her cat, Millhouse. This is the tale of a plot that refuses to change when Rachel attempts to alter the story of her current book. Equally quirky is The Egg That Knew Too Much – perhaps my favourite of the stories, as read by the suburb Toby Jones. It’s the story of Ted, who loves eggs until one day he cracks one open to find a tiny scroll predicting a horse race winner. The notes become regular and the predictions are always accurate until one day they change to begin predicting who will die. When his own death is predicted, Ted races against time to find the egg farm and break the curse.
In the final story, read by Simon Bird, Mike and Rob are like two peas in a pod until Rob gets their dream IT job. Like the stories and a narrators before, this is a fun tale with an unexpected twist, expertly read by the narrator.
Crackanory is a British audio series so should appeal to lovers of that absurd British humour that they do so well. Highly recommended.

Muse with a Ruse

Perfect listens during the mundane of my shift work - kept me on my toes with the stories. Thought simple and turns out adventure and laughter and gasp of hint of horror at moments. Plan on listening again since they entertained me so well.

A Decent Freebie!

Certainly as a freebie I can't complain about this one. Five varied stories, all a bit on the strange side which will appeal in different ways to different people. My personal favourite was the new take on the ancient Egyptian curse in "Mummy Business" but I found at least one wry smile in each of them. There is at one point cracking line describing Noel Edmonds which I particularly enjoyed. The "IT Man" was almost Luke Smitherd-like in its approach but very much a light version of him given its brevity.

I have only occasionally seen the TV series and obviously you miss the visuals from the experience but I think those of us that read and listen to audiobooks a lot don't need much help in that department.

I wonder if this is a pre-cursor to a series . . .

Five uneven short stories. Two good. Three so so.

I've never seen any Crackanory TV tales. Not broadcast in my country. So this is my review solely based on this audiobook. No comparison to the TV show. No spoilers.

1: Kill Phil - Sort of a modernized internet slanted version of "Strangers on a Train". Good story idea. Enjoyable.

2: Mummy Business - Not very enjoyable. Story that goes nowhere really. Slight chuckle at the characters trouble saying Nefertiti correctly though.

3: The Character Assassin - The best of the stories. A creepy story that could have been a good Twilight Zone episode.

4: The Egg That Knew Too Much - A story that feels like a mix between Twilight Zone and Monty Python. Not very enjoyable though.

5: The IT-man - The least enjoyable story. Had a hard time focusing on the story at first. Then it was just... bad.

Narrators for all the stories was great. Lively and eminently listenable.

Utterly brilliant

These short stories were reminiscent of Roald Dahl and Jeffrey Archer. Darkly twisted, well narrated.

Loved this series "Back in the day..."

A couple of hiccups within the recording, but still listenable. Not one of the better stories, but was an enjoyable enough way to pass a little time.

Five short stories with a twist

This was a freebee and there is nothing wrong with that. Free stuff means you don't have to pay for it which means that you have more cash to spend on other stuff like more audio books so this is a good thing in my view.
There are five short stories in this collection and it is a sort of a cross between an adults' Jackanory and Tales of the Unexpected (I'm showing my age here). They are described as "too cracked for TV" whatever that means. Yes they are a bit saucy in places but there is nothing here that is unsuitable for older children. My favourite one was the one about the author whose character comes to life, it is very well written and performed and had been laughing out loud. The Egg one is quite funny too. Recommended.
