very pretentious

it boggles my mind why someone who is writing a book about sailing for the non sailer would start right out of the gate by describing how to sail with the most complicated and over technical language with out defining or explaining any of the terms. idiotic and pretentious. (as a sailer I can tell you most of the terms used are 200 years old and serve no purpose but to signal to your listener how refined you are). for instance measuring the speed off a vessel in hitches instead of knots! what are you trying to teach people? , how to get a job on a Spanish gallion? trying to explain a subject with all the technical language you can muster but not explain any of it is like handing a kalahari tribesman an iphone and expecting him to order you an uber.
Seems as though the authors intention was virtue signaling and sales. putting a swear word in the title for cheap attention clearly exposes the book for what it is. thin air and no substance. don't waste your time

F--k it all and find a different book

The title suggests the abandonment of the daily stress of life and promises to tell you everything you need to know about sailing... to get away from life.

It starts with a highly technical explanation of sail management, which is informative but so overly technical it could easily lose the reader. Optimum sail trim is the realm of the racing yachtsman or perhaps the perfectionist but surely not for those who just simply want to get away from it all.

Early in the book, we move into the list of nautical terms you " need to know" which again is a mariner's thesaurus so overly complex and full of completely irrelevant jargon, much of which bears little or no significance to modern recreational sailing. We do not need to know the historical significance of the relationship between a ships size and barrels of wine!

I will probably continue to listen to the book - perhaps it will get better. Perhaps I am premature. However, I believe many readers will be lost in the first few chapters.

The book content, at least so far is very much mismatched to the title.
It should be called, " Why sailing is way more complicated than you think!"

Postscript.

Finished the book. The second half seemed to be extracts read from some kind of owners manual. The end of the book comprised mainly of a geography lesson on parts of Europe complete with a rundown of natural resources.

Really!

Do Audible check the quality of the books they allow on this site?

Excellent book.

The description is accurate and explains many of the aspects of sailing for the beginner with pretty good detail.

Good Approach.

There is so much terminology and concepts to know and quickly goes from one to another, expecting you to remember everything she has said as she builds upon it all. Highly recommended.

Excellent!!!

Excellent!!! What I liked the most about this sailing that it was comprehensive in that it covered all areas of basic sailing in an organized but simple to understand approach.

Word Salad

I have never written a review about anything in my entire life but couldn't help myself because I'm totally baffled by what I just listened to. This book comes nowhere near delivering on what's promised in the description. Should you make the same mistake I did, you will find yourself listening to a computer-generated voice running through a dictionary of sailing terminology, very little of which is helpful whatsoever. Further, the narrator (or computer) consistently mispronounces basic sailing terminology. "Gybe?" Really? I can't comprehend how the author listened to this and signed off on publishing such a train wreck on audible. Must have been one of those "F*** it" moments. The other reviews posted on this website cannot be about the same book, or perhaps I'm also missing something here.

A dream of mine is sailing in retirement and with limited knowledge, I'm reviewing all I can. This book was very basic and informative and completely enjoyable. Good, listen.

Boring and poorly written book that used an expletive to sell copies. Struggled to listen to the first chapter of this book without gouging my ears out with a spoon.

good explain.

I can honestly say that as a beginner sailor, I learned a lot of stuff just by listening this book. I have come back to it multiple times and find it is a great refresher right before I head out on the water. Recommended.

Rubbish

No story to it. Just a whole heap of badly used and poorly defined terminology. Not worth a listen.

Excruciatingly bad

This is almost impossible to listen to, I tried and tried again but had to give up.
The story, which to be fair is worthwhile appears to have been narrated by some sort of badly programmed robot. The grammar and punctuation are non existent, with words missed out, badly mispronounced and lacking any human structure or flow. It just does not make sense. I have listened to many excellent audible books, but never anything as bad as this. I can only assume it is some sort of programing error or trial as the author could never have approved this narration

F*cking rubbish

Well, my sailing boat is three and a half hours away by car, so I get to listen to a lot of sailing books on audible.
This one is so bad that i turned it off after about half an hour, so maybe I never got as far as the "good bit".

There are at least two problems with this book. Firstly it seems to be narrated by a synthetic digital assistant with the 'characterisation' level turned all the way down. Its so bad that its really difficult to make out the words, partly becasue the grammer is f*cked as well. Secondly, when (or indeed if..) you do tune in to the distressed android shouting down a tunnel, the words they say, when re-arranged in to an order we generally recognise as similar to English, also turn out to be sh*t.

So I guess they're right - f*ck this and, save your money and go sailing instead. I'd like my money back + the thirty minutes of my life wasted on this.

Absolute rubbish

If I could return this I would in a heartbeat. This has to be the biggest waste of time and I can't believe that anyone would actually waste their time writing such a useless book. Do not waste your money on this!!

The book is essentially just a dictionary for sailing words and phrases for over an hour and a half...

Excellent detail used in depicting all the elements of sailing are particular strengths in this book. Middle grade listeners will both learn from and enjoy this. And I, an adult, loved it, too.

Very well done.

Very well done, lots of great information just a bit dry on the delivery. He makes a GREAT argument for at least practicing mooring while under sail without a motor. I will be practicing this from now on.
