About this listen

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, 2017

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable, audiobook edition of Evicted by Matthew Desmond, read by Dion Graham.

Arleen spends nearly all her money on rent but is kicked out with her kids in Milwaukee's coldest winter for years. Doreen's home is so filthy her family call it 'the rat hole'. Lamar, a wheelchair-bound ex-soldier, tries to work his way out of debt for his boys. Scott, a nurse turned addict, lives in a gutted-out trailer. This is their world. And this is the 21st century: where fewer and fewer people can afford a simple roof over their head.

From abandoned slums to shelters, eviction courts to ghettoes, Matthew Desmond spent years living with and recording the stories of those struggling to survive - yet who won't give up.

A work of love, care and humanity, Evicted reminds us why, without a home, nothing else is possible. It is one of the most necessary books of our time.

Excellent book. Informative, thought provoking, heart wrenching and inspiring.

I would consider starting with chapter 26 and then reverting to chapters 1-25.

Excellent. Well worth reading/listening to

I definitely didn't expect it, but this book was both educational and riveting. The book feels like a story and you want to find out what happens next but when you finish it you will be left thinking about the fact this is all real.

believe the hype

This impeccably researched book about the experience of poverty in the United States provides a wake up call on the failures of current economic models. You would be a cold hard character to listen to this book and not appreciate the grinding poverty and totally unfair system that pervades too many people's lives. A call to action to change the way welfare is perceived and provided; everyone deserves the right to safe and secure housing at an affordable cost.

Must listen!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was both informative and entertaining. The narrator had a lovely smooth and authoritative voice. The research the writer put into this work was extraordinary and the way he brought the stories to life is to be commended. I recommend it for anyone who has an interest in society, relationships and the struggle of being human.

Best book I’ve read in ages

I really don’t know what to say about this incredible piece of work. To say that it has stayed with me for a very long time, or that I’ve learnt so much, I had no idea, or I’m devastated by the stories - these words don’t come close to describing my experience. Thank you Matthew Desmond for your work. I feel humbled. The epilogue was really incredible too. I’m so glad you added your personal chapter; it made complete sense.

Loved this work

Incredibly devastating piece - clearly showing the forces of inequality, race and poverty, in the operation of low cost private rental. Powerful case for urgent reform.

Well researched & powerful
