About this listen

Eversion is a superb, original Gothic SF novel. A small group of intrepid explorers are in search of a remote and mysterious artefact. It's a well-funded expedition, well organised, which is lucky as they're sailing north of Bergen on the schooner Demeter, searching for a narrow inlet which will lead them to a vast uncharted lake - and their goal--

Until disaster strikes.

Doctor Silas Coade wakes from disturbing dreams, on the steamship Demeter, in pursuit of an extraordinary find almost too incredible and too strange to believe, secreted within a lagoon in the icy inlets of Patagonia. But as they come in sight of their prize he and the crew see they are not the first to come so far: there is a wreck ahead, and whatever ruined it may threaten them as well--

Shaking off his nightmares, Doctor Silas Coade joins his fellow exploders on the deck of the zeppelin Demeter and realises something has already gone dangerously wrong with their mission. If any of them are to survive, then he will have to take the exploration - and their lives - into his own hands . . .

Loved the clever thinking behind the way the story is stepped out and the narrator Harry Myers is amazing !

One of the best books of 2022

Very well read with great accents and delivery of the main character. Up there with Reynolds’ best work for me.

Great story of twisted and blurred realities

Well written and good performance.
I was expecting something different, unsure why. I guess the 'gothic sci-fi' in the description was truthful, and with a Jules verne+steam punk flavour, but I almost felt that I was listening to a Jules Verne novel. I don't dislike Jules Verne, mind you.
I found this story rather tedious: less twisty-turny and more are we there yet.
We had action and drama but it felt instead more disruptive to the storyline. In a literal sense, it was written that way, but it was also like a moderately convoluted movie plot where you are thrust from one action scene to the next. Here we were without the benefit of special effects and visual cues, and it almost needed them. As if I was reading a screenplay or something. Maybe I was?!
So, not a bad book. It ended satisfactorily. I was glad when it had ended.

Not what I expected

Reynolds as always has outdone himself, which after 20 years I've come to expect.

What I did not expect was the absolutely incredible performance of Harry Myers. This is the second time in my life an audio book has moved me to tears, I can't say enough great things about the performance, especially in the final chapters.

Perfect.

astoundingly good
