 Die Familie Grandet lebt in Saumur an der Loire in Frankreich. Grandet, ein alter Böttchermeister, ist durch Spekulationen und Geiz sehr reich geworden. Seine einzige Tochter Eugénie lebt ein freudloses Leben bis ihr Cousin Charles zu Besuch kommt. Sie verliebt sich in ihn. Da Charles‘ Vater Pleite ist und Selbstmord begeht, sieht Grandet Charles als "nutzlosen Esser" und schickt ihn nach Indien. Seine Tochter hofft auf eine baldige Rückkehr von Charles, doch wird bitter enttäuscht. Nach mehreren Jahren, Grandet ist inzwischen gestorben und Eugénie Alleinerbin, kehrt Charles wohlhabend nach Frankreich zurück und heiratet eine Adlige. Eugénie bleibt allein. Ihr Wunsch nach Liebe wird nicht erfüllt.
