Sommaren är hetare än någonsin och en bit norr om Gävle hotar en våldsam skogsbrand. Samtidigt har flera kvinnor blivit förföljda i Boulognerskogen i stadens utkant. Ingen av kvinnorna har skadats, inte förrän nu. Ambulanssjuksköterskan Erik Sandström och kollegan Karin bistår poliserna Patrik och Janne på ett uppdrag där en kvinna hittas brutalt mördad. Kvinnans hals har skurits av och från buken har mördaren avlägsnat hennes lever. När ytterligare en kvinna hittas mördad på ett liknande sätt levererar den minst sagt udda personen Tomas Svensson en teori som inte går att säga emot. Någon kopierar en seriemördare som härjade i London för 130 år sedan. Gävle har fått sin egen Jack the Ripper.
