Le livre d'Esaïe est placé en tête de la section des prophètes dans la Bible. Son auteur est en général considéré comme le plus grand d'entre eux. Probablement issu d'une famille noble, il est marié à une prophétesse. Au début de son ministère, il est apprécié. Toutefois, comme la plupart des prophètes, il ne tarde pas à devenir impopulaire car ses messages sont difficiles à accepter : il appelle le peuple à se détourner de ses péchés et lui annonce le jugement et la punition de Dieu. Esaïe exerce son ministère pendant 60 ans avant d'être exécuté sous le règne de Manassé (d'après la tradition). Il est le porte-parole de l'Eternel en Juda sous le règne de plusieurs souverains : Ozias et Jotham (ch. 1-6) ; Achaz (ch. 7-14) et Ezéchias (ch. 15-39).
