In "Irrwisch" wird die Geschichte einer toten Ehe erzählt, die aufgrund von Aufrechterhaltung der gesellschaftlichen Konvention weitergeführt wird. Obwohl Dymow aus Beschämung über seine Frau Olga dieser nicht mal mehr in die Augen sehen kann, unternimmt er einen letzten Versuch, die Ehe zu retten.
"Im Alter" erzählt von dem Architekten Uselkow, der in Aussicht eines großen Auftrags in seine Geburtsstadt zurückkehrt und dabei seinen alten Freund Schapkin aufsucht. Schapkin hat vor 20 Jahren die Scheidung von Uselkows erster Frau abgewickelt und dabei etwas mehr Geld als vereinbart in die eigene Tasche gesteckt. Zum Leidwesen der Frau, die daraufhin von einem Offiziersbett zum nächsten hüpfte, Nervenprobleme bekam und irgendwann verstarb. Uselkow besucht daraufhin Sofias Grab, aber er empfindet dabei nicht die kleinste emotionale Regung.
