Ein adeliger Radikaler schleicht sich als Lakai bei dem Petersburger Beamten Orlow ein, weil er dessen Vater ausforschen will, einen Staatsmann, dem er in grimmiger politischer Feindschaft gegenübersteht. Seinem Ziel kommt er keine Spur näher, doch wird er zum unfreiwilligen Zeugen, wie Orlow seine Frau erniedrigt und betrügt.
Als der falsche Lakai seine Verkleidung fallen lässt, ist die Frau bereit, mit ihm nach Europa zu fliehen. Er, dessen Gesundheit so stark angegriffen war (der Bluthusten ist Cechovs persönliches Leitmotiv), lebt in der Schönheit Venedigs und dank der Liebe zu dieser Frau wieder auf, sie aber, die von Orlow schwanger ist, scheint durch die Petersburger Ereignisse gebrochen, bringt eine Tochter zur Welt und vergiftet sich. So verpassen sich die beiden Lebensbahnen auf tragische Weise.
