Publisher's Summary

A Collars & Cuffs story

Since the death of his submissive lover two years ago, Leo hasn't been living--merely existing. He focuses on making Collars & Cuffs, a BDSM club in Manchester's gay village, successful. That changes the night he and his business partner have their weekly meeting at Severinos. Leo can't keep his eyes off the new server. The shy man seems determined to avoid Leo's gaze, but that's like a red rag to a bull. Leo loves a challenge.

Alex Daniels works at Severinos to scrape together the money to move out on his own. He struggles with coming out, but he's drawn to Leo, the gorgeous guy with the icy-blue eyes who's been eating in his area nearly every night.

Leo won't let Alex's hesitance get in the way. He even keeps him away from the club so as not to scare him. And as for telling Alex that Leo is a dom? Not a good idea. One date becomes two, but date two leads to Leo's bedroom...and Alex discovers things about himself he never realized and never wanted anyone to see.

    Story
    "2nd listen"

The story is a pretty good 4 🌟 or there abouts.

The first time I listened to this, I hadn't had much experience with Audible or narrators. Nick J. Russo distinguishes the characters well. However, this time through, I noticed something that really bothered me. At least part of the story takes place in Manchester's Gay Village; in England. There are no accents in the narration of the book. Hearing about the kettle being turned on, or somebody's mate, and not in the paranormal sense, without a British accent just doesn't sit right with me. I still gave it an overall 4 stars because if you put aside the knowledge that they are in England, the audiobook isn't half bad.

    Story
    "Beautifully done"
What did you love best about An Unlocked Heart?

Everything, the sweet characters, the love story, the BDSM scenes, not much but I loved the one there was, and definitely the narration

What was one of the most memorable moments of An Unlocked Heart?

Not answer to that question because of spoilers, but in general terms every moment Alex and Leo were together

Have you listened to any of Nick J. Russo’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listen to a few and I guess the difference might be more in the story because the ones I listen to were more humorous and this one was way sweetter. Both genre equaly well done. I think he can narrate complitely different genre with a great ability,

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh and love the characters, and also to feel related to their feelings. It was a great story and a great narrator as well.

    Any additional comments?

This was so different from what I expected. Being a BDSM story I had some expectations about it, but the book went far beyond them in the best possible way. It was certainly sweeter than I thought, which was great.

The characters were so nice, I liked Alex’s shyness and the family conflicts that were so interesting. I loved how the author take enough time to introduce the characters and slowly develop a realistic relationship. Leo was such a great character too, I loved how he had his own insecurities and it was good to see a dom portray in a more believable way, with real emotions and not all the time so self-confident. I think it made him more sympathetic and it was beautiful to see how interested he was in not pushing Alex to things he wasn’t ready yet. It was such a lovely relationship.

There was some nice secondary characters too. I don’t remember reading any characters that didn’t seem like he would have a story to tell. The only issue I had with the book was that I felt like it extended too much. I didn’t feel the last chapters were necessary to tell the story and it kind of bother me a little, I would prefer it to end sooner because I lost part of the emotion at the end.

I listen to the audio version for most of the book, I think the narration made me loved the story even more. I generally say I’m not a an audiobook person, but I’m second guessing myself, because I think is a matter of the narrator. On this occasion it was beautifully done. I loved the pace, the different voices given to the characters and the way he told the story. It was great.

    "Unlocked a New Series"

An Unlocked Heart audio book is a great listen. Alex and Leo's personalities rise from the storytelling, with the focus being on their development as a couple as they individually work through their own issues. Leo is just coming out of his funk after his sub died years ago when he meets Alex. As they flirt, readers also get to meet other secondary characters I'm sure we'll see in future books.

The two men are exactly what the other needs. Leo is established in the BDSM community and his experience allows him to be patient with newbie Alex. The gentleness in their interaction was sweet... and also hot. The slow evolution of their relationship feels authentic and by the end, I was satisfied with the journey.

    Story
    "Great Narration, BDSM light"

Leo has been neglecting his own desires since the loss of his last submissive. When his friends ask him to help with Alex’s training, he realizes he needs something more in his life than just running the club.

Alex is new to the scene in all ways and closeted and very shy. It takes Leo to make him admit his own desires and have the strength to come out to his ultra-conservative family.

For people who are new to BDSM or like it on the “light” side this is a good book as it isn’t too… extreme. If BDSM is definitely NOT your thing, then skip this series.

The relationship is definitely highlighted along with the physical aspect of their relationship so there is a good balance. The angst is fair, sometimes a bit contrived in my opinion, but mostly appropriate.

    Audio:

Nick J Russo is one of my favorite narrators. He has this amazing deep and penetrating voice that tends to give me shivers.
Unfortunately his voice just didn’t work in this story. I didn’t like his “Leo”. I thought the voice his chose was too feminine and not nearly hard-nosed enough to be the Dom that he was. I also thought a few of his other voices – the cop, Alex’s dad, and some others were a little too over the top and they were distracting.
Usually I just gush about him but I didn’t think this story was a good fit for him.

    "Amateur Writing, Reader Even Worse"

Story takes place in the tough industrial city of Manchester, England. But I'd guess that the reader is a twenty year old American suburbanite. And the reader has only three voices: 1) for a if 50 year old dominant - a voice that sounds very much like Kermit the Frog; 2) for all other big hyper masculine dons - a voice just like Andy Sandberg's from SNL when he's playing a California surfer boy; and 3) the reader's regular voice for everyone else, male or female. I'm sure the cheap publisher saved lots of money in hiring this guy to read Unlocked Heart, but save your own and look elsewhere for an audiobook.

But I'm not totally happy with the person reading, he makes some of the people sound slow.

"Beautiful story but .... an American narrator?!"
What did you like most about An Unlocked Heart?

This is a beautiful story, I love the development of Alex and Leo's relationship, the way BDSM is portrayed in this book is fantastic, it shows the basic principal of Safe, Sane and Consensual. It also shows some of the common pitfalls such as people who don't understand. This is just one of those stories that gives me all of the warm and fuzzies.

What was one of the most memorable moments of An Unlocked Heart?

Oh so many! I love when all the doms show up to move Alex but Alex and Leo in the group room .... OMG So sexy!

Did Nick J. Russo do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

He did but I was not that fond of the way he portrayed the doms, especially Leo. These guys have very commanding voices, Leo sounded more insipid than Alex, Thomas was also not good and Miles sounded like a twink! Also Leo seemed to turn into some kind of parody voice that at some points that was frankly creepy!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This story makes me laugh, cry, need alone time with my kindle, sigh like a love lorn heroine .... all of the feels!

    Any additional comments?

This book is written by a UK author and is set in Manchester. Whilst it is not overly British there are British phrases and mannerisms which I why I was very surprised to find the narrator was American! As a narrator I liked him, but not for this book. I am terribly disappointed that someone English could not be found, and I'm not saying I wanted Mancunian accents throughout but some of it just sounded weird coming out of an American's mouth

    "Raunchy easy listen"

Good story that's easy to listen to - can stop and start and you don't lose the story. Just wish that books set in England were narrated by some one with a UK accent. That I have to say is the one down side to this book.

    "Great start to a series"
Would you listen to An Unlocked Heart again? Why?

Yes I would listen to An Unlocked Heart again because I loved the interaction of all the characters, and they way the story was told.

What was one of the most memorable moments of An Unlocked Heart?

One of my most memorable moments in this book was when Alex & Leo finally admitted their feelings for each other, Oh and another one was when Alex put his work colleague Pietro (think that's how it's spelt) in his place by describing exactly what him & Leo will be getting up to later that evening.

What does Nick J. Russo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I haven't read the book so can't really answer that question

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Alex's dad comes to his room when they are getting ready to move Alex out from the family home, and he finally, for the first time opens up to Alex, that was just beautiful.

    Any additional comments?

Great start to a new series for me but I have already started listening to the second book "Trusting Thomas" which by the way is proving to be just as gripping as the first book, and I have just purchased books 3,4 & 5.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Fine to while away a few hours / to switch off to

What did you like best about this story?

The individual characters were fairly well-developed

Would you be willing to try another one of Nick J. Russo’s performances?

Yes, if the storyline was actually set in the US

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Probably not, not unless the storyline was developed a little further

    Story
"I read the book first - had to have audio"
Would you listen to An Unlocked Heart again? Why?

Yes, but will still cringe at the narrator's futile attempt to speak English - his mis-pronunciations are appalling and grate every time he murders the Queen's English. This is a rudimentary problem which should have been picked up at recording. He should know better and have checked words he does not understand otherwise he should not be in a recording studio.

What did you like best about this story?

Having read the whole series I knew I was in for tender romance along with some explicit sex scenes.

What three words best describe Nick J. Russo’s performance?

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE - Needs to learn to speak ENGLISH not American.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I laughed and I cried. The story - and the series - have a strong BDSM theme and listeners must expect explicit language, but going beyond that there is a tenderness which shows the author understands what a BDSM relationship can really be like - and that is not what so many people assume (an abusive and arrogant Top and a weak and slave-like submissive).

    Any additional comments?

The story is set in Manchester ENGLAND - WHY OH WHY is the narrator American and someone who has not a clue about English pronunciation. It was painful to hear him sometimes and I found myself waiting with dread for his next mangling of a word.
