I Erling Jepsens nye roman indkaldes Kalle, der er søn af handlekraftige sønderjyske Erna, til tysk krigstjeneste under Første Verdenskrig. Han har ikke så mange kopper i skabet, som man siger på de kanter, så Erna tør ikke lade ham drage alene i krig. Hun får fingre i en uniform, sniger sig ind på kasernen og kommer med troppetransporten sydpå. Her tager hun del i øvelser og kampe, indtil noget sker, og hun må forlade skyttegravene. Men Erna vil stadig være i nærheden af Kalle, så hun beslutter sig for at slå sig ned på stedet som næringsdrivende med et yderst idealistisk formål: Hun vil ødelægge den preussiske hær indefra på en yderst udspekuleret måde.
