 Erik Satie, ein Pionier von scheinbar beziehungslosen Harmonien und surrealer Sprach- und Musikexperimente, hinterließ ein erstaunliches Gesamtwerk, darunter auch etliche kurze Prosatexte. Auf Hunderten von Zettelchen notierte er kleine Geschichten, Bizarrerien und fiktive Inserate. Seine Partituren durchsetzte er mit allerlei Bemerkungen und Spielanweisungen. Er hielt Vorträge, erfand absurde Szenen und schrieb sogar ein Theaterstück.

Erik Satie setzte aber vor allem mit seiner "Musique Pure" einen wichtigen Meilenstein der musikgeschichtlichen Entwicklung. Durch absolute Einfachheit, seine Abkehr von Dramatik und die Aufgabe von Funktionsharmonik, gelang ihm eine reine, unverfälschte Musik. In den "Trois Gymnopédies" äußert sich diese "Rückkehr zum Schlichten" in einem antivirtuosen Satz, einem simplen, zwischen zwei Akkorden pendelndem Begleitmodell und modalen Zügen in Melodik und Harmonik. Er schaffte somit die Voraussetzungen für den "reinen Ton" - die sich selbst gestellte große Herausforderung seines Lebens.
